AEM ECU map for Autobox?

About to install my AEM ECU but have heard there can be autobox stalling problems.

Is this still the case? The threads are all dated 2006/7 and there may be newer firmware upgrades since then, and mappers have now had a while to refine the settings.

Thanks

Fitted uprated torque convertor 3800 if i remember and Pete Betts adjusted the pressure settings on the box when he mapped it, however i will add i do not rip it around definately from a standing start i do not have uprated gearbox or prop, depends on how you want to drive the finished product, i just use my power from when it is already doing 60 / 80 mph.

from memory i think Ryan didn't like mapping the AEM on a stock auto box, however a built auto appears to be ok, i am sure he would not mind a pm as he is a jolly helpfull chap, interesting to read Thor have done an auto, Rob Wilds car goes well with the AEM but for me i am going emanage ultimate and let the stock ecu sought out the gears

Thor also mapped the AEM on my auto T61 (stock box). It was never 100% right, though they may have mapped out the problems had the engine not given up the ghost. The main issue was that it shifted into 'D' with a huge lurch. This is apparently a commonly seen issue. After the rebuild, it was remapped at Interpro, which eliminated some of this problem.

However, despite absolutely babying the auto box, I quickly destroyed two. Either this was bad luck or the AEM as it was set up was wrecking them.

In the end, I had the choice between getting a built auto box or a manual conversion. Although I really like autos, I opted for the latter and I haven't regretted it. The remap by Ryan was awesome.

I keep hearing that the AEM can work brilliantly with the auto box and that it's all down to the mapper. I'm yet to be convinced. I haven't been following threads on the AEM Power forum lately and maybe this speaks volumes, because (touch wood) I just don't have to worry about the AEM anymore.

Incidentally, the car made 451 at the crank at Thor at 1.4 bar (on their notoriously high reading dyno). After Ryan remapped it, it made 504bhp at 0.95 bar.

In theory, the AEM could be piggybacked onto the stock ECU so that the stock ECU still controls the autobox, but this would require a bespoke harness. At one stage I was considering this and contacted Pete Betts at Thor, who said it was possible. I rejected this option because, as far as I know, it would be the first Supra running this arrangement.

IMO, there are more reliable ways of running a T61 auto. Contact Ryan, ask what he recommends, and get him to map it. I don't think it will be an AEM.

I had this conversation with Ryan recently. His advice is go piggyback (preference: EMU) because there is no standalone that works properly with the autobox. The AEM still has the same age old problem of stupidly high line pressures - that's what causes the 'lurching' into gears and ultimately destruction of the boxes. The BL autobox is stronger but the 2nd gear sprag is the one that tends to break because it isn't uprated (IIRC) so again you'll break these boxes on an AEM.

Cheers,

Brian.

excellent info mate and confirms my research/thoughts on the piggyback/auto route, i am sure the aem can be made to work as Robs car seems to go well but he has gone through a few Boostlogic boxs so i dont know if this is related. Yes you are correct it is the the second gear sprag that goes as there is no upgradable part for this

The (AEM) mapping on my car is IMO excellent! It changes really quick/smooth (much quicker than stock). The BL box is an excellent choice when they bother todo some quality control. Both of my boxes have gone through leaking fluid / broken pumps which has in turn made the box run dry. Well the first one anyway. The second one started leaking a few months ago but this time round I have been treating the car with lots of sympathy and checking it / topping it up after nearly every long journey. I have every confidence that if the seals etc had been replaced when the box was at BL then non of this would have happened and the car would be running low 11's even 10s( thinking about Robbies setup). Paul I think your car / box is a fine example of when all the parts are done correctly i.e. mapping / BL box rebuild / turbo install etc etc sort of proof that they can be reliable. Again my first box that went bang I believe Michel had it rebuild "properly" and its running 550BHP and is fine!
