M3 or M5?

No. Certainly not good ones anyway. If you're buying an M3 you want an April 03 or newer made one. The earlier ones had some nasty rod bearing issues.

(I think it's April 03, might be May, I forget right now)

A stock Supra TT won't keep up with a BPU Supra either.

Stock ones? I disagree. (I currently own both)

My brother has an E46 M3 and he cant keep up with me and i know he is getting on abit but he knows how to drive a car!! :p

Cant honestly comment about an M5 but to be honest i wouldnt try and compete with one until of course it reaches 155 ;)

Im sure Jake wil be along soon enough, he had an M5, pretty sure he said it felt quicker then a BPU Supra
Mines an M3 Danny. In a straight line it's faster than a Supra TT, a bit slower than a BPU Supra.

It's faster round corners and much nicer to drive generally.

It also has pretty good fuel consumption - I average over 27mpg. You will get less than 20mpg from an M5.

But regardless of all that, with a 10k budget I would still buy an m5 in preference to an m3.

I wouldnt mind a drive of an e46 m3, my brother had an e36 m3 evo for a while and when I drove it I was really dissapointed as I imagined it would feel really superior to the supra with the build quality etc.

I bet the E46 is nicer however :)

Anyone know what the performance difference is between the two?

Hello All:).... The only reason I asked is that I don,t have a Supra TT yet but I will be getting one ! I look on this forum at all the different types..TT ..TT BPU and T61 Singles :diablo: . I thought of getting a T61 single but I am concerned about the cost of the upkeep and reliability ( Even if it will only leave the garage 30 to 40 times a year!) I think the best move for me is a Supra TT and after a while buying good quality parts ready for a BPU.

I concur with you.

yeah my brothers sounded like we were going fast but I never felt a surge of power at all, I was always expecting a little more.

I wouldn't mind having an e36 3.0 m3 but I'd definately have to turbo it, I think then it would be a real street weapon.

I've got no idea if there are kits available for them?

Horse power freaks do a turbokit for them, loads of videos on youtube, few companys over here do supercharger kits for them, Rapid GB quoted me 6k to supercharge mine for 450bhp.

neither will keep up with a BPU Supra but they are both fairly decent cars.

I raced an E39 M5 in my BPU Supra from 50-120 and there was maybe 1 car length in it, if that.

That looks like its American mate...

It's international, and the best site for all your M5 needs.

Big, much bigger than the on paper figures might suggest. The E46 M3 is a very quick car, no two ways about it - sub-5 seconds to 60 isn't hanging about.

I love the E39 M5 and would dearly love one, especially now that the cheapest cars, not even mega mileage examples, are down to £7k. The only thing that would put me off are the running costs. My editor was lucky enough to run one for just over a year as a company car recently and the total running costs for 22,000 miles, not including fuel, depreciation, insurance, Tax or MOT, came to £8500. Fuel, incidentally, came to £5500...

I've been looking at M3s for a few months now. The cabs seem to be a lot cheaper for some reason but you're still looking at closer to 15k for anything half decent. You'll get a low mileage 04 for that money though. I've seen some 03 models for 12-13k but mileage is usually over 75k.

The way costs are going I'm thinking about lowering my sights to the 330, about 2/3rds of the price of the m3 but fully loaded and pretty rapid.

Is that the one that had to have a new gearbox? i was reading about it in one of the mags ages ago.

Whats the issues with E39 running costs? Do lots of things go wrong with them? Big servicing bills?

Never had nothing go wrong with mine, drove across france in it with no problems, sold it with 80k on it to a mate and it has over 100k now and never missed a beat.
