New engine, full rebuild?

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a uk spec supra in the near future, and out of interest am wondering how much it would cost to make the engine as reliable as possible. The first option is a brand new engine from toyota, i'm just wondering how much a brand new NA engine would cost and if anyone can recommend where i would get this from? Figures for a TT would also be useful, but getting hold of a unmodified UK TT seems unlikely. (reason for unmodified is for insurance)

I found these links out and wondered if there a good or bad price for a OEM engine:

Then the other option would be full engine rebuild, using all OEM parts, rough guess for a price and where to get this done would be fantastic.

The standard engine is incredibly strong, so unless it has a serious problem there is little point rebuilding - unless you are planning some serious upgrades. Stock TT's will easily do 200k+ miles when not messed with and looked after, NA's will go on for a lot more, I'm not sure anyone has found a limit yet but there are a couple on the forum with over 250k miles.

For the cost of a rebuilt engine (and all the not insignificant install/build costs) you could buy a spare supra to keep 'just in case' :D

Thanks for the response.

I'd still be interested in how much it would cost, just incase anything did occur.

I have another question, if i bought a NA supra, and converted it to a TT, how would i insure this? As a TT or as a modified NA?

A properly rebuilt engine would cost at minimum £3k provided you are using new parts, though most decent engine builders will charge a fair bit more than this.

For an NA it'd be unheard of considering 2nd hand engines can be had for circa £200. They are very strong engines and will go forever provided they are well looked after.

If you converted the car to a TT you don't need to declare it to DVLA (since the engine size is the same), but you obviously need to declare it to your insurance company. From my experience it's only a about 30% more to insure a converted NA to a 'real' TT.

Buying an NA with the aim to convert it to TT is not at all cost effective due to all the other parts required to do the conversion.
