Mike
'Full HD' usually means 1080p - which is the current top grade of HD. Apparently the is another even more awesome flavour on it's way though
Havard
Yeah, I get it now. I thought it was maybe something that you can upgrade to but it seems that it is a level of viewing detail. It would be easier if they just gave the resolution details and left it at that. Looks like a Toshiba for me then tomorrow. 32" for £349.00..... H. This ones in Empire Direct in Bolton. 32" Toshiba with Freeview, HD Ready. Saw it in the Mirror paper today. I have a Toshiba at the moment and it's about 15 years old and never missed a beat. I would only ever consider Panasonic, Toshiba or Sony really. I am not sure I can handle an extra 8 inches.... H.

Mike
To be honest I'm not a TV geek or anything, but when I bought mine I had Toshiba in mind, being that their CRT's (normal teles) have always been great. When you see them all in a row the two that I absolutely *did not* want were the Toshi and the Panasonic. The pictures were just dull, they looked cheap. Personally I would go Samsung or LG. I got a Samsung in the end and it is a cracking picture... after buying it (yeah, kind of the wrong way around) I checked the AV forums and apparently the black levels are amazing! Strange that Mike but I really looked into these things and in the shop the Panasonic ones looked great. They also had a 5 year guarantee. I have had ours two years and the black levels are not as good as they were. It is still a great picture IMO. I am watching The Fog on ITV4 at the moment and I have been commenting on how good the picture looks. I was put off the Samsung as the sound didn't seem right to me. Horses for courses eh? H. Mike
erm, well... I haven't ever used the sound on mine...? I got a surround system with it... I was in one of those 'f@ck it I'm having everything' type moods!

Sorry, I was only referring to the extra 8 inches As long as your lounge doesn't look daft with a large tv in it, go for it. The difference is amazing, and as its flat, it doesn't look anywhere near as intrusive
RiceRocket
Shouldn't you opt for Full HD if you're gonna watch Blu-Ray? Isn't HD Ready just good for Sky HD at best....?
Mike
I think Sky HD is now in 1080i... which is better than the 720p they pimped for a long time. Go full HD.

Due to my Xbox live antics, I am being banished to our spare bedroom if I want to shoot the yanks!! H.
jamesmark
What it is the ratio with these telly's? In re to how close you stit to them? I know there is a certian distance for each size that you have to sit away from it or it is pointless having one.
Mike
What it is the ratio with these telly's? In re to how close you stit to them? I know there is a certian distance for each size that you have to sit away from it or it is pointless having one. Ability of the eye to see 1080p A person's ability to distinguish small details is described by visual acuity. When individual pixels are barely resolvable, increased resolution brings little benefit for the viewer unless the viewing distance can be shortened or the display enlarged. Thus for 1080p television viewing, there is a minimum size to distance ratio to see a significant benefit. The ability of the eye to resolve 1080p content also depends on the amount of contrast in the picture. For optimum viewing, it is recommended to sit back approximately three times the diagonal of the screen. So for a 40" tele... sit 120" away

SimonB
You can't rely on what they look like in a shop - most shops don't set them up properly, hook them up to a shite signal and the manufacturers use shop demo settings that make them look more vivid. That makes them look better in a busy lit shop next to another TV but rubbish at home in a darkened living room. Personally I wouldn't buy a Samsung, they have a pretty poor reputation for reliability at the moment, just have a look on avforums. As with anything you generally get what you pay for. If someone is advertising a big TV very cheap it's normally because it's an old model and/or not very good.

It's going to get abused playing video games which I don't think is particularly good for the telly anyway..... H.

Pot
So for a 40" tele... sit 120" away I was just thinking, does that mean for a 19" PC screen, people should sit nearly 5' away?... lol - I've got a 46" 1080p Samsung (The sound's crap but I've bought some nice bits for surround sound, very nice )
juanchan
I've heard that Sky will never be able to broadcast in 1080p, so the only way you'll ever get the most from a 1080p TV is with BluRay disks. Makes me ask why manufacturers are pushing for improvements when no-one has that much need for it really.
