Did anyone go to Crufts??

Was a bit disappointed, not with the organisation or the show itself, but with the changing commercialisation of the event. More people seemed to be there to buy gimmicky junk for their pooches, scents, fancy flashing leads, hats for their dogs, blah blah. Very American. Relatively few visitors seemed genuinely intrested in looking at the dogs in the rings,m which was good as we could get up close at virtually every ring and take piccis, but made us wonder if the halls should be split differently, so people who wanted to browsw and buy weren't battling for floor space with those wanting to dog show watch?

Also, if a breed standard calls for male dogs to be 31 inches at the shoulder, should an entry to the worlds premier dog show even be granted to a dog that's about 26 inches? And should the breeders be allowed to pursue the Kennel Club to change a breed standard to reflect what they have created, rather than trying to breed *TO* "the standard"? Another way and reason in which some breeds have seemingly changed dramatically within the last 10 years or so?

Having bought 2 dogs at at least a grand a piece from 2 different breeders at the show, within the last 12 months, I was a bit miffed that neither saw fit to ask how they were doing when we introduced ourselves. Both were patently in it for the money though, so although a bit *issed, we were not entirely surprised. Buying a dog from a "gentleman" who is a female impersonator maybe should have rung a warning bell.... ;)

Our 3rd dog, which we bought from a most charming lady who is a consultant surgeon, and who we already regard as a true friend, has been asked after, visited, and generally cared about to an amazing extent, despite being a "common" breed and relatively cheap. A case of someone breeding dogs for love, rather than money?

Didn't go but saw it on the tv. I want to go to that one in November where they have loads of breeders and loads of dogs there, yay!

If it's someones business then generally they are in it for the money, however there may be the odd few who actually care I suppose :(

Couldnt agree with you more Chris. Spot on........

We bought our Dobermann Pup, Sabre, from a first time breeder, with parents from excellent bloodlines, and she constantly enquires as to how he is doing etc.

I also watched it on tv and thought it was a bit cack this year...........i didnt think the judging was that brilliant either !

My ex-Mother-in-Law-to-be is a dog breeder (Italian Spinones). She generally shows at Crufts. From what she's said, dog show judging is corrupt to the very core. :(

Totally agree. Big money in it, it's who you know rather than the quality of the dog in most cases.

My dog Sam is now retired from showing partly due to this and also because he tried to bite a male judge for feeling his bollocks :p Fair enough I thought :limp:
