Impressive Zoom

Probably something the resident photography fans are already aware of but this photo really shows how much detail you can get with a decent zoom lens.

It was taken by a chap at work and I noticed it in his Flickr album when I was looking at some other stuff he sent out to us to view, I suspect he has a secret stash of more interesting stuff but this one was impressive enough for me. It's a 400mm lens apparently, I presume they are pretty expensive?

I've had to reduce the quality a fair bit just to attach it but you can read the newspaper on the original.

Unfortunately it doesn't look half as impressive as I thought it did now I've uploaded the low res one, oh well.

I've been looking at an in-betweener Point n Shoot & DSLR and the Panasonic FZ28 looks to be a contender- now around £200 with a 27-486mm lens.

I've got the FZ30, quite a nice camera for anyone considering a move to SLR without actually wanting to spend too much at this stage - quite flexible in it's abilities and plenty of manual options too.

You main issue is the price of extras, the limited number of bits you can actually get (the lens is good for most things but not everything) and the pics can be quite noisy, especially at low light.

If I was in your position I'd probably keep saving for a used "real" SLR though, you'll get everything the FZ-28 has to offer but you'll also be able to move forward and enhance it should you want to.

They seem to like it though.

tbh the main shot might be taken with a wide angle which might make them look further away than they really are and the close up with a decent zoom lens which would indeed be good enough to read the paper.

I have a couple of L series lenses from Canon which are astonishing. I love using them for portraits but often have to blur out the skin detail a bit or you could see every pore when blown up. Simply amazing resolution when used with a pro camera body.

For SLR cameras go Canon or Nikon but for just down from that level the Panasonic Lumix range are all very good.

I guess I like the idea of just one lens, (for the time being) and some idiot proof settings with some options for manual control.
