Electrical problem - where do I start?

I would really appreciate it if anyone has any ideas about this problem with my newly-acquired 93 MkIV N/A:

Driving around, everything fine, then suddenly the power steering will switch off, the speedo will drop to 20mph (actual speed unaffected) and, bizarrely, the odometer will clock up kilometeres at the rate of one every 15-20 seconds even when the car is pulled over. Generally if I switch it off and leave it for a few hours it will return to normal. It may all happen again after driving for a bit but often doesn't.

My mechanic reckons £200 for an investigation and repair (he says it's likely just a faulty switch or relay) but I can think of many, many things I'd rather spend my £200 on.

Anyone had anything similar or can tell me where to start?

Cheers,

sounds like you have a dry joint/badly fittted speedo convertor.

fully agree with this, I've seen very similar with the power steering and speedo reading with a nasty ebay converter that had a fault.

It's actually a pretty simple, just a few wires connect it in. However it'd be adviable to take it to a knowledgeable garage to get it checked, labour wise it shouldn't take long to diagnose as they're easy to get to. Which part of london are you in?

Thanks for your replies, folks.

Wow - Homer himself. Thanks for the response - I'm in Richmond. There's a Jap specialist up the road at Barnes Bridge but if you know of someone good (and cheap) then let me know.

It's good to think it might NOT cost an arm and a leg!
