Homer
There is a very good web designer on the site, but I can't remember who the heck it is! Will let you know if it comes back to me
Suprachargedtt
lightwave has just started his own buisness making websites, ill point him in the direction of this thread for you...
fri3ndly
It all depends how much like Rightmove you want it to be. If you would just like to be able to publish and edit properties then thats ones thing and is fairly simple, but having them coming in on a feed, having full control with member signups etc etc is another. If its the latter then I believe £4k sounds like a reasonable price, the company I work for would probably be considerably more though :-P I am always willing to take on private work however ;-)

chunk
This is what i need and what i have been quoted £4200 for!!! findahouse is my comapny name.. Complete custom design and construction of "findahouse" website. Professionally designed interface to give credibility and confidence to customers. Designed to be user friendly with clear navigation and quick download times. Production of design visuals for approval. Format to take into account the future growth and additional functionality. Online access to Wave Seven'’s development server to approve the project as it progresses. Bespoke Content-Managed-System to administer areas of the website. Website to include: About us, contact us and general information pages etc (content managed). Houses for sale - All search criteria as per RightMove but with one additional drop box which is "Local Area" e.g. Abington, Kingsley etc but without the VirtualTours/Walkthroughs floorplans etc. Houses for rent - same as above. Estate Agent Login area - to allow estate agents to upload property information including 8 pictures exactly like right move but without the VirtualTours/Walkthroughs floorplans etc. Public Login area - to allow customers to upload property information including 8 pictures. These would not be made live until administrator approval. Request Detail Function - Enter user detail on form and this together with the property details would be sent to the estate agent who uploaded the property. A link from the property page to aboutmyplace.co.uk to display the map information. Ability to allow uploading of adverting banner adverts to the right hand side of the page specifying placement by areas e.g. kingsley. ---------------------------------------------- Additional option for the above would be as follows: 1. Local directory for trade/businesses to logon and add a text entry. Only to go live after admin approval £360 2. Registration for automated email alerts on properties customer are looking for £220 ----------------------------------------------

Snooze
That £4,200 quote does sound like a bargain to me. Is there any additional charge for ongoing maintenance?
marbleapple
That £4,200 quote does sound like a bargain to me. Is there any additional charge for ongoing maintenance? I'm no expert (as Shaun knows) but £4,200 seems expensive for a lot of 'general' work. What requires 'specialist knowledge? By way of comparison I just asked to have a login area for my clients where they can login and add models directly to my site.... £75. I am presuming that customer logins all work on similar lines? £4,200 in a new project when the market is already saturated with similar sites with serious funding and estate agent support.... good luck
stevie_b
marbleapple: AFAIK customer logins do all work in a very similar way. There's 2 or 3 techniques that can be used, and I would guess that 99% of the websites out there use one of those techniques. chunk: a bit off-topic perhaps and re-iterating what marbleapple said, but make sure that your website will be sufficiently different to (& better than) Rightmove before you splash the cash. I wouldn't think you'd want to duplicate what's already there, unless your business model is significantly different than Rightmove's. I don't expect answers to these questions on this forum, just something to think about (which you may already have done). If you've thought about it and still reckon it's a go-er, then I hope it's a success for you!
fri3ndly
By way of comparison I just asked to have a login area for my clients where they can login and add models directly to my site.... £75. A login area for customers to upload items for £75? So.... Login interface Multiple user logins Signups (possibly?) Forget password System e-mails Form validation Uploading/form functions Area that states what you have uploaded and when Hosting space (Just at a guess) £70. So I assume thats at around £5 per hour if the job is done properly. Were the developers abroad by any chance? One last thing to leave with you... You get what you pay for and I am pretty sure Rightmove had a budget of 20k + at least. Good luck!
SupraShaun
You get what you pay for and I am pretty sure Rightmove had a budget of 20k + at least. Good luck! For the rightmove i would say the development costs were more like 50k +

SupraShaun
By the way i quoted Marbleapple for the login area. I agree 75 is cheap, but hes a fellow member and i have no need to rip him off- club spirit
marbleapple
Were the developers abroad by any chance? : Errrr.... *goes of to PM Shaun to check he isn't based in India* By the way i quoted Marbleapple for the login area. I agree 75 is cheap, but hes a fellow member and i have no need to rip him off- club spirit Not that cheap On a serious note I think it proves a good point... webdesigners are like replacement windows.... the companys charge you for what they think they can get from you. Its up to you to decide if you think it's worth it or not and whether to find someone who is willing to do it for the 'right' price. I wonder how much a sole webdesigner would cost to build a Rightmove if he did it on standard cost basis.... never mind what the company paid. fri3ndly
Its up to you to decide if you think it's worth it or not And if you want quality/professional work thats thoroughly debugged and tested across all browsers or not. Obviously it goes without saying that I would charge friends etc much less though.
