Lexus GS300 sport - oil leak

Hi,

New member here with first question. Sorry its not Supra related but thought you guys could be quite helpfull. Hopefully some of you can give some pointers and/or shed some light. I have a 97 GS 300 Sport with 120K on it (2JZ-GE) only owned it a week and drives like a dream. However it has sprung a nasty oil leak and im unsure where exactly its from. But it "could" be from the oil filter housing (factory sandwich plate?) Car had no leaks when i bought it so its just gone very recently. It seems to be from that passenger side of engine and has been running down the block & backwards under the car... onto the exhaust etc. A friend thinks this oil filter housing is no1 supsect so far.

Do the filter housings have a gasket behind them? or some sort of seal? Being new to the Lexus scene im unsure of where to look for any technical information or advice. Are there any area's i should be looking at for the leak? known fail spots etc.

Im also an MR2 owner and have occasionly browsed your forum, so im not completely new to the Toyota/Lexus family.

Have also posted this over on the Lexus owners club, but thought you people might know a little more about the engines etc.

Thanks in advance for any help, its much appreciated :)

Cheers

Ross

There is a rubber seal on the oil filter housing but IMO this is unlikely to have failed to give a noticeable leak.....

I would check the passenger side nearer the front of the engine than the oil filter housing, basically behind the aircon compressor.

The oil pressure switch is tucked away there and can fail and basically oil is pumped out of it! so it can become quiet a major leak.

You need to get under it and find the forward most oil and report back :)

Hi Scooter,

Many thanks for your reply. What you say about this oil pressure switch being a substantial leak AND it being on the same side of the engine is quite interesting. I will take a look with a friend when i can. And i'll be sure to report back. I have stored the car away at my sisters house untill the problem is solved so will def take a look whenever we can head round. Are these switches expensive to replace?

Thankyou again for the advice, i'll be back :innocent::D

If its that it'll be cheap to fix........especially if you can diy. Its £10-15 for the sensor, a few nuts/bolts to remove the aircon compressor and then you just need a odd size (25/27 not sure can check) deep socket to remove/refit the sensor.

If you can get the engine undertray off it and then start it up you should be able to see it leaking from the sensor it indeed it is that.

Heres hoping so anyway. As we are new to the car we'll check what you have suggested first. You've been very helpful indeed Scooter, going true to your slogan under your name for sure! Will report back whenever we have checked it. Thanks mate

......like to see people having a go at fixing stuff and been helped out myself many times on here and elsewhere, hopefully me taking 5 mins saves you a few hours.......but sods law says that you eventually find its something else leaking :D

as a finale the sensor is the one in the bottom left hand corner of the attached pic, the black plastic outer bit will have a plug from the engine loom attached to it.
