CJ
My son is looking to buy a laptop and has been looking in Currys Etc. He wants it to do the normal internet surfing but also to play the newest games which advises at least 2gb Ram etc. Can anyone suggest (with links if possible) machines that you consider good value. michael
We should have a sticky for this.
CJ
I agree as the specs available change all the time. I did do a quick search for a recent post but didn't find anything.
michael
With Christmas on the way this is going to be a daily / weekly question, maybe we need a single post where people can just post specs of decent machines they have seen while shopping or ones that have been emailed to them. Would save people like yourself having to do any legwork themselves Playing the latest games on a laptop is an expensive business though, what budget do you have? Guest dannyboy107
What sort of budget you look at? personally i would never go to currys pc world dixons comet as usually you pay alot more than you should but then if you feel buying over the internet for something like a laptop is abit risky then i can understand. But for anything computers http://www.ebuyer.com is just the top dog reliable and secure and defo not a rip off. if u tell me your budget say then i can give you a few examples
Scott
In order to play modern games your going to be looking at a laptop with dedicated graphics memory. This increases the cost. For a decent laptop with dedicated graphics your going to be looking at around £500 FWIW i find Acer laptops to be the best value for money. CJ
He has looked at the Laptops at Currys and the spec includes 3GB ram and 500gig hard drive. I didnt look at the graphics card options but those machines came out at beyween £500 and £600.
TLicense
I recently got one of these, and I would have to say it's pretty good. http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF05a/321957-321957-3329744-64354-64354-3738095.html It copes pretty darn well with games too.... I think that could be outside his budget. Methinks his spend will definitely be no more than £600 tops!
Scott
http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/483281/FUJITSU-SIEMENS-AMILO-PI-3540/tab/specification Thats the one i would buy if i was after a £600 laptop. Very fast processor bus for laptop and also loads of memory, harddrive space and dedicated graphics.

As above, i have found that for printers and laptops you are as well buying from dixons/pcworld/curry's/comet etc. Its only when buying individual components that i shop around. carl0s
What about one of these? : http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop_studio_15?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs. The £499 one. I haven't had one before, but it looks styling wise a bit like the XPS M range which are quite sexy. It seems to tick all the right boxes, and if you want a higher or very-high res screen, you can select that. Price seems good. Fujitsu Siemens aren't great on build quality - I've had many of their smaller more expensive machines fall apart (Lifebook S-series). Acer are great for spare parts - very cheap, but not my favourite to actually use (touchpad buttons are too tight/stiff). Dell's latest offerings are all generally nice to use. £499 seems a good price too. You could have it cheaper, but with a slower processor. You can have different colours too
Spike3.0
Dont buy just yet............ All the new ranges are about to come in for Christmas ! There be some good deals, always is specially with your buget. There bound to have blueray etc... (I work for Pc World )
osso
I'd wait until november when dell release their new top end studio range, replacing the XPS, im sure the inspirons will be updated too with the new motivano chipset (centrino 2). I am planing to buy a laptop too, but 2 key things are important.. must use ddr3 and ATI graphics chipset,, nvidia have screwed up big time this year. bromy
Take into account build quality too, my last two literally fell to pieces just after the 12 months warranty. I am now using a Vaio 18 months with no issues

RedM
I have an Acer 5920G with 2.0ghz Core 2 Duo CPUs, 2gb ram, a 250gb HDD and, for the games, an Nvidia Geforce 8600m GPU. £499 (without the insurance claim) It plays games pretty well but then I don't feel the need to have stupidly high resolutions or have some of the more pointless graphical options switched on. I mean, who plays games based on their looks?
CJ
Thanks for all the replies so far . I will get him to look at this later and see what he thinks.
Class One
I'm in the market for a laptop as well. £500 budget, for browsing/games/storing photos etc. Games wise I don't play high end graphics intensive stuff, but recommendations welcome. TLicense
Same again Doug. HP Pavillion DV6700. It really is a good laptop.

I had a quick browse of the Acer ones earlier but couldn't see any dedicated GFX ones at a decent price range.
