If I was to go shopping tomorrow, you reckon I could pick one of these up from a high street store?:innocent:

Depends on the High Street store you try I guess, Top Shop won't have any but Jessops might... but then it depends on the High Street and what shops it has to offer I suppose.

any canon D series 300d are v cheap poss £150-£200 s/h. 20d 30d etc etc. you get what you pay for I guess, they take the eos lenses. have a quick look on ebay to get an idea for future lense upgrades. nikon lenses always seem to fetch 'good' money imo. not had much to do with nikon in general, but people do rave about them. Its another biased question tho tbh. like the auto/manual debate ;)

Good luck

a warning tho, if you do decide you want a canon wait a week or so.. canon do cash back promotions twice a year, and they generally start mid october and last until january. and again in May until July... you will probably be able to get 50 quid cashback on the 450D.

I'm a pro photog and have always used Canon gear. However, if I was to buy new now I would get Nikon. Their latest stuff is phenomenal.

For your budget I would suggest finding out what the latest model is from Canon and Nikon and then shop around for the previous model as lots of suppliers will be getting rid of old stock and you might get a bargain. At that level Canon and Nikon are much the same so have a look at a couple and see which one you like.

Try to get one with auto dust removal if you can - saves loads of computer time getting rid of dust bunnies (those out-of-focus blobs common on digital images caused by dust on the sensor) later!

Ordered a Nikon D80 with a 18-55mm lense and Tamron 55mm-200mm lense, 4g SD, Centon bag and Hoya Filter for £535delivered next day, cheaper than the jessops website showed;)

How long do you reckon its going to take me to figure out how to take a decent photo? I just remembered work with a Bulgarian lad, he has a 450D, once we get round the language barrier I'm sure he'll see me right:P

it took me about 6 months I reckon before I understood the basics, I still often get it wrong though and I havent taken a pic that i've been happy with for a few months now :( I've still got a sh*t load to learn but i've not had the enthusiasm lately.

I'd say try to take a 100 photos a day with different settings, upload them and work out what does what :) I use to shoot in manual mode and raw all the time, but It's time consuming and pointless imo, I now shoot in jpeg basic and aperture auto or shutter speed auto, you work out which shutter speed and the camera will select the aperture and vice versa,(a lot of pro's shoot this way) dont go full auto though as you wont learn anything,a lot of people do shoot this way which again seems a waste of a high end camera.

Bah, give us a budget figure of £300-400, then just ignore all our recommendations and spend over a hundred quid more :p

  • 3 weeks later...

Well that didnt last long - camera isnt turning on - put the battery in charge, its not charging either, I get 3flashed instead of the continual flash, checked charger fuse all good, its not been knocked/liquid spilled on it or any damage like that,

I bought this camera as I was sick of party cameras breaking on me, had this 2weeks and its fekd already what the......!!

Called Jessops, said go in and they may replace the parts or all of it, I bought it through their online system as its a nightmare for me to get to nearest Jessops before it shuts, what a p.i.t.a!

I thought DSLR's were reliable or do you reckon its a faulty battery?

hi,

the D80 is a nice choice of camera, glad you got one of them :)

best thing to do would be to buy another battery. That way you will know if it is a battery fault, or something else. Also, never hurts to have a spare one.

one thing with these type of batteries, don't let them discharge completely, they are not designed for this. Best way is to recharge them often, normally minimum i let mine get to is 50% power, but try to recharge at 70% - 80%.

Sometime in the future, really would recommend you to get a MB-D80 for the camera, it will take two batteries and is more practical for a days shooting, or if you are on vacation. I use an MB-D200 and it vastly improves handling of the camera with the other control options, more so a much better grip, and just feels right in your hands.

hope you have many hours of great photography, a whole new world out there when you see it through a camera :)
