OhGod
Hi all, I've been getting a knock from the front of the car when pulling away and usually when braking - I don't seem to notice it when braking at higher speeds, but that could be the road noise masking it. A quick search suggests subframe bolts, so I will get a garage to look at them shortly. I do however have a have another problem which may be related to the above, which is a very severe rumble/vibration - though you hear it more than feel it - when just coming to a stop, that last 2-3 seconds, usually when turning (such as into a car parking space). It sounds like you've hit the rumble strips on the motorway when doing ~70MPH, but I'm probably doing 3MPH or less, but that's the sort of frequency of the rumble/vibration. Thoughts/suggests? Cheers. Edited October 17, 2008 by OhGod (see edit history)

miko_supra
first of all have a good poke around under the car. Check all your control arms are nice and tight and have no play in them, and check subframe bolts.

OhGod
I'm going to get the balance and tracking checked on Saturday - just because it's cheap and local to do - so see if they find anything. I'm guessing if the wishbone bushes have gone that others are close to going and best to replace a whole bunch at once? Thanks for your suggestions so far. Thanks for your suggestions so far. best to replace the same on the opposite side of the car too at the very least. You can replace the arms with stock toyota items (they do not supply replacement bushes) or get after market poly bushes installed. OhGod
Thanks for the replies, it'll give me something to look at. Something I perhaps should have mentioned earlier - doh - is it's only recently been through (and passed) the MOT, so should they not have picked out any dodgy bush issues? I quite like the idea of replacing the lot - going from the reviews of various people that have done the 'refresh' - but I've only recently bought the car and was hoping for a few months (relatively) trouble free motoring. I've already had to replace the battery, and now this, and I've only had the car a few weeks!
OhGod
Just to update really; tracking and balance was done today, did nothing for the knock or vibration but has improved the handling in general so was out a bit I guess (even though it was adjusted before I bought it ). With a bit more playing today, the vibration only happens under light braking and turning. Hard braking and no brakes don't seem to produce said noise. Seems to explain why I get it just before I stop as you generally ease of the brakes towards to end, so it's that light braking at the end, with the wheels turned that seems to cause it. Not sure if this affects any of the suggestions above? I've read about warped discs, but I'm guessing I'd feel this under all braking, especially at speed? I got a few ideas from you guys, thanks for that, so will drop it into a garage during the week I guess. Any other ideas please post. Cheers, Gareth. OhGod
Just back from the garage. They say near side upper wish bone bushes are worn, as well as the near side engine mount. Does that sound about right for the knock symptom described above? The vibration noise/feeling they're a bit more confused about, but have suggested the discs could do with a skim as they seem lipped - but this seems a bit more of a finger in the air suggestion. Any thoughts?
