Trapped nerve in your neck type thing!

You know how sometimes you wake up and your neck/shoulder just REALLY aches?

1. What is that?

2. What causes it?

3. How do you cure it?

I've had this for a week now. It seems to be in the side of my neck and top of my shoulder. I've tried massage, stretching, Ibuprofen and now I'm rubbing Deep Heat onto the affected area. Any other ideas (bar a Lemsip and a w*nk)?

I've had this really badly recently, It's lasted for well over a month! The doctor said I had a trapped nerve in my neck / shoulder, and it's quite common apparently. I got put on some extra strength prescription Codiene and Diclofenac by the doctor, and have refrained from any lifting for a few weeks. It's pretty much gone now (Thank god!)

I had the same thing a few weeks back... struggled on with it thinking the next day it would go away and it hung in there getting worse and worse.

and then..

I wandered into our account managers office and one of the women who works there luckily for me has 'actual' magic hands.. and she took it away in about a minute.

I'm not sure what she did.. it felt like the same massage I'd tricked had from every other tart lady in the office, but this one worked.

So if you can muster a trip to Pompey, I can sort you out. ;)

Had this a few times now and each time it has been worse.

Last time i got taken to hospital because each time i moved my neck it caught the nerve and my whole right side went into spaz mode.

What seems to trigger mine is the cold. I cant sleep in warm room but try to keep my neck covered. A good soak in a hot bath helps and them things you warm up in the microwave (use them for migranes?) not food :D.

And any drug that will help relax you is good.

The doctor gave me diazepam and i prescribed myself a few cans of stella that just about helped.

make sure you sleep in a good position - loads on the net on how you should lay - neck related.

I try my best to make this NOT happen again as one its the most painful thing ive had and two i looked like a right twat walking in the hospital then get a spaz and wobbling about and swearing.

I get this a lot due to not being able to move my arm properly. The easiest thing is to try and keep it warm. Like Edge said, a good soak in the bath should ease it for a while. I've got a wheat pack - basically a wheat filled tube you stick in the microwave for a few seconds and lay it around your neck/shoulder to let the heat flow through. If my shoulder is playing up, I'll go to bed with one under my neck.

A quick search found this website...

Have got the same trouble here it think it's called getting old :)

there is a fix for it though as at this time of year your bedroom will get colder during the night and not covering your shoulder enough with bedclothes / duvet lets the cold air get to it and hey presto screwed shoulder ! further on into winter you'll heat your house more and wear more clothing in bed as you're more conscious of it and will have less trouble ;)

Try sleeping in a different position, as you could be aggrevating the nerve.

Also are you doing much weights (I read a thread somewhere you're running lots?) as you could be just putting too much pressure on the nerves/muscles in that area and so not allowing inflammation to go down as your muscles are obviously inflamed if being exercised regularly in a training/cv/weightloss regime.

NSAIDS (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) should help, i.e Ibruprofen, but this is only a temporary measure.

I once slept in a really awkward position and a trapped nerve was so bad I couldn't look right, my neck hurt so much I saw purple spots in front of my eyes - a right b*****r when driving as I couldn't look out of junctions without moving my whole upper body. Painkillers or something to take the inflammation down helped, but all I could advise is rest and find the root cause, try having +1/-1 pillows in bed or try and sleep on your back.

Hope this helps.

Otherwise whiskey and a w*nk.

Find a good Chiropractor in your area and let him have a look.

They're not especially cheap but the guy I was recommended really helped and it's got to be better than sitting around a doctors/hospital all afternoon.

Apparently you should always sleep on your back or your side.

Been there many times. Basically I put it down to stress and too much bad posture on the computer.

No amount of different sleeping positions, excersizes or visits to the doc helped. Just big elephant sized Ibuprofen.
