CJ
I am thinkng of buying a Plasma LCD TV to mount on my lounge wall. Does anyone know of any good deals out there (MCanny?). I would ideally like a 38" / 42" if possible.
SkyJawa
38 to 42 is still the realms of plasma mate, LCD is around 36 biggest IIRC. I really don't think there much between the technologies either. CRT is still better though - but takes up so much more room. If your looking at plasma, the Panasonic screens are very rated and superb. I myself have a 42" PWD6 Panny and its brilliant, best purchase I've made, it may have cost me 1600 and its now around 1200, but the picture is amazing! Its since been replaced by a better model but it still rules! Your best bet is to have a good look on http://www.avforums.com I never buy anything home cinema related without researching on there first! Happy hunting! Suprachargedtt
As far as i know all of screens have the capabilites of Hi-Res but for those that cant recive it directly, there is going to be a "freeveiw box" style add on through your standard scarts. I would personally go for plasma as i personally think its the better format (no viewing angle problems etc). The Panasonic panels are very good value for money but it depends if money is an issue? before you buy i would recomend you to look in to the Pioneer screens and the Philips "Pixel plus" screens james
CJ
Thanks guys I reckon it is a wall mounted Plasma then. Anyone else know of any bargains out there?
terribleturner
CJ, i personnally wouldn't buy a Plasma now. Sony decided quite a while ago now to end production of the screens because they are expensive, the parts to fix/replace are expensive, and their life span isn't that high. And if Sony falls in the market it's only time before we see everyone else drop out to. If you can get a really good price on one then go fo it, but otherwise i'd recommened looking into the lcd screen area.
toyotasuprauk
Reading AVforums as mentioned is a good start but take a look at http://www.richersounds.com for some ideas.

SkyJawa
All the issues people have about Plasma's have been cured with the new panels. Most screens from about jan last year have increased lifespan and burn in is not an issue - how long do you leave a screen on 1 view to burn in anyway....... As for life, new plasma's have an expectancy of around 50000 hours IIRC. So for my usuage, or even on average usage it would last around 10 years, possibly even longer, and by then I'd be looking to replace it anyway! As I said, all these Q's are answered on AVForums, its a very good site and you should be able to find out the latest deals through it

I think it's more of an issue with those stupid channel logos that are always there in the corner of the screen.
jonshaw_uk
i got a 42" plasma at christmas (pressie for myself ) i mounted it on the wall in the living room and its one of the best things i have everbought, just like being at the cinema all the time. Ive got it connected to my surround sound system football rugby and movies are excellent and even the ps2 is connected - ultimate home entertainment system. Ive seen 42" lcd tvs but price is well expensive compared to plasma. Ive just bought a 23" lcd tv from my conservatory (for a good price) but its retail price wasn't far off what i paid for my plasma. Go on CJ you know it makes sense. kunwho
http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=182615 The new Sagem 45" DLP rear projection seems to be popular. Hi-def ready and the price cheaper than Plasma. Doesn't suffer from burn-in.
terribleturner
How's Sony's old Mini Disk doing these days Funny you should say that coz i was only talking to someone the other day asking the same thing. They are still quite a big thing in broadcasting. Nearly everytime you hear a voiceover on the tele it's played from minidisk. But then we still use a form of the old betamax tapes to. SkyJawa
I think it's more of an issue with those stupid channel logos that are always there in the corner of the screen. There is that but people don't tend to watch all 1 channel and bear in mind that most that display a logo go to adverts every 10-15 mins, so its never really up there long enough to cause issues
SkyJawa
Minidisc was an excellent idea, that just wasn't taken up too much, I still use mine and they are superb I have a MD rec stereo, MD rec walkman and 6 disc MD changer in the car so it kinda makes sense I think the biggest mistake Sony made was not incorporating them into a replacement for the floppy disk drive - would have been superb for that and capable of reading and writing a fair few hundred MB...... Suprachargedtt
Sony still produce 37" and 42" plasmas? Most of the problems you hear related to plasma are myths and arnt as common as people make them seem. As others have mentioned AVforums is a good place to look
CJ
Bloody hell this is confusing. I have joined the AV Forum and have been having a read but as I am a technical numpty, I am even more confusd now than beforehand. I started to read a thread about the LG RZ-42PX11 and then noticed it was 98 pages long So, what is your opinion of this? http://www.electricshop.com/invt/4066lge109267a
Suprachargedtt
Thats a good price and a good screen, we have one of these where i work and there very good value for money but our price is a bit more than that
womble
Got to agree with with the people that have pointed you in the direction of AV Forums, great site with plenty of people in the know that are equally helpful. As far as I know regular CRT sets still offer the best picture / £ ratio but let's face it just aint a touch on either LCD's or Plasmas looks wise which when hung on a wall not only look superb but also take up far less room. Don't know how much of an issue screen size is but if you're after something really impressive and enjoy watching films then personally I'd take a look at one of the many projectors availabe. I've got one in my front room and with a 14ft throw (projector to screen) I get a fantastic quality 7ft wide picture. Once again check out AV forums for datails on these.
