But what about the man that advertised for people to eat on the interweb?

I've never laughed so much in all my life when I read the bit where he said he turned 4 people down....for being too weird!

Ok that's good. I raise you- Fred West.

Nasty.

There's a famous paper on 'Crowd Baiting' by Mann (1981)*:

He studied 21 reports of crowd baiting of suicides. The larger the crowd, the more baiting there tends to be. Also, the worst baiting usually occurs at night.

Social psychologists refer to it as deindividuation - being in a group typically makes you feel less responsible for your actions and more anonymous.

Are all examples of deindividuation negative?

I can only think of bad ones eg gangs, footy hooligans, etc.

Mostly, but not always.

There was an interesting experiment done by....I forget the names...damn. Anyway, they got a group of volunteers that didn't know each other , put them into a room and turned the lights out. They weren't given any particular instructions, but conversations and behaviour were monitored.

After half an hour, there was a distinctly touchy-feely thing going on, with a lot of hugging and physical contact. After the experiment, 80% reported feeling sexually aroused.

Quite how this might translate into a real life situation, I'm not sure, but it does indicate that anonymity and deindividuation doesn't always equal increased aggression.

It just means when the lights go out and we get bored and don't want to sleep we might as well shag instead.

i read this in the paper recently and i felt a bit sick that people would do that, but on the other hand he shouldnt of been up there, and he shouldnt have listened, so really he's the only one to blame for his death. but again they must of made it 10 times worst for him which lead to his death.....................ahhhh who cares, this country has far more bad people than good..............

The forum bell end strikes again. I know that you are young and that hopefully you will learn but why o why do you have to post up this naive crap?? This guy has a family and friends who will be beyond upset at the moment, having been to the scene of a few suicides it ain't pretty.

I've seen a few on this board but this is quite possibly the dumbest post yet

I miss out of these due to him being blocked but it's nice to get confirmation of why he's in the stupid people dungeon once in a while. Thanks for quoting.

I was unfortunate enough to get a call once, (when I was in't fuzz....;)) to say that a guy was threatening to hang himself on a grass verge on a housing estate. I remember joking at the time, "Let him swing".....:sly: After years of people threatening and not doing I had become a bit complacent!!

I arrived at the scene about 20 seconds after the guy had swung from the highest tree around. He had tied two jumpers together and hung himself......:( There was a gang of kids there some as young as 4. People were sreaming at us and time seemed to stand still. We tried to get him down but couldn't get up the tree. Eventually some ladders arrived and we cut him down. Miraculously he actually survived after being given CPR etc. That sight will stay with me forever of the guy just hanging there....so still and there was nothing we could do..!! I reckon he had spent about 5 mins hanging, he'd gone blue and sh@t his pants!! I believe he has some kind of brain damage now so in some ways in may have been better to have left him to die.

The lesson I learned was, never joke about sh!t like that again!!

This poor lad in Derby is just another sign of the decline of society!!

My partner witnessed something similar to the original story.

In Basildon, guy was going to jump from the top of a multi-storey and the crowd were shouting for him to do it. We really are going right down the pooper as a country, aren't we?

She left before anything happened, but was disgusted too.
