Tigger
No not for speeding. I was heading home after one hell of a stressful week at work when I saw this policeman on his bike going in the other direction, I thought nothing of it as I was obeying the law. A mile and half later I look up and there the policeman is on his bike flashing his lights at me, so I pull over put down my window and he said I want to check your number plate as it looks too small. He then checks the whole car over comes back and tells me my number plates do not match, (yeah I know that the rear is far to big;)) So I ask what size is the British standard to which he couldn’t tell me :rolleyes:and then he said my rear wheels are close to the limit. He tells me that I have 14 days to get new plates get the car to an MOT centre have the paper work signed to say the car is now legal and to get the paper work back to Devizes Police station. He really must have been board to go out of his way to turn round and follow me what a T****R

Gerry
Bummer Tigger.... I keep waiting for this to happen to me (think my front is smaller than yours). Had a policeman take a long hard look at it (then me) when I was stuck in a jam and he was walking down the traffic to pick some bits of car up behind me. I wriggled through the jam before he came back.. Sooner or later I suppose See you Friday night G x

Kopite
I've had something similar, was driving out of the car park a year ago, and an unmarked police car cut me off, even though i was going slow, i still had to slam on because she came out of the blue. She got out ranting about my number plate being too small, so i said i was sorry and i'd get it fixed... What's more punishable - small incorrectly sized plate or no plate at all? I know no plate is a £30 fine, remember someone saying a wrongly sized plate could be worse? Sorry to hear that Genna, you should have cried and made him feel bad
Rob
On the other hand, I was once driving through the high street in my old Landy, which had been MOT'd a week earlier but I had forgotten to get a new tax disc for, and a policeman walked by on the pavement, stared directly at the empty corner of the windscreen and carried on walking. Rob
is a small number plate ok on a jap import? thats what i have been told Check DVLA website. I beleive the smallest font height is 61mm but only if the car has a specific plate carrier that precludes a normal UK plate (73mm high font)

Looking forward to it Gee, I wonder what made him turn round and stop a young blonde in a Supra. Maybe he thought I was to small to be driving such a big car:)
Tigger
I know that if you have an import there is a different rule, but as mine is UK I guess it has to be UK ruling. Only thing is mine are stuck on so I have to now buy the mounting plate ect too get them fitted. I could have got a £1000 fine too, so I’m guess I’m lucky in that respect. I will go and measure the font size, when I get dressed hehe Thanks Rob

Tigger
Mine has passed 2 MOt's with this plate. 61mm front and 75mm on the rear
Havard
You should have killed him and eaten the remains, free motorbike too. You got off lightly then..... I got a £30 fine even though I demonstrated the difficulty in replacing it as it was glued to my bumper...... I expected a DVRS from them and the 14 day opportunity to fix it...............NO, straight to the fine....tw@ts!! I paid the £30 and kept that plate on for another 6 months without any problems with the law. H.
Terminator
is a small number plate ok on a jap import? thats what i have been told I think this is a bit of a grey area, so it is really not worth the hastle. I have given up with a small plate at the front as I got fed up with the attention it got from the local constabulary and the £30 it cost every time I got pulled. It really pisses me off that I get picked on, while there are other local cars that have, for years, had really dodgy fonts, front and rear plates. There is a blue MX5 round here, I have seen the car regularly over the past four or five years and it has never had a front plate. It is pretty obvious that the law is not evenly applied. Pete
http://www.craigsplates.com/import-number-plates.html So the important bit here is: If you go onto the DVLA website you will find the following information: "All number plates must meet standard size for lettering and style (with the exception of imported cars that were not designed for UK plates and have a functional reason for not using standard size plates). Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display number plates with smaller characters if: The vehicle does not have European Community Whole Type Approval AND the vehicle’s construction/design cannot accommodate standard UK size number plates". I would think that if you have a standard Supra you have no argument against having a UK spec plate. They will fit fine just as per the UK version. You could perhaps say that because you have an aftermarket front bumper that you can say a UK plate is not accommodated. Even so, that is an aftermarket item deviating from manufacturing spec so I'd say that's also a very thin argument.

Guest CoolsBlue
errr wtf is that officer on about? i seen the pics in your garage, the lettering looks legal. and the uks do have a larger rear plate that fills the bumper moulding. duno about your tyres tho, when you pop down to the station, mention how the officer was able to point out your plate sizes were wrong and how he couldnt tell you the legal sizes;) did you get thier name? Its up to the officer, i have the "import" plate on mine.. i got pulled over a couple of times due to the insurance company not having me on the database so i was showing on there search as uninsured and therefore pulled over a few times until i got it sorted.. All gave the car a good look over.. and the plate was questioned by all, when i said it was a import with non standard space for a plate and told them it was legal (it has a dvla Import code on the plate to say it is a valid type/size) all said fine! the only trouble i had with mine was when one officer in a very bad mood said well i can't see it from a distance so you can pay the fine or go to court to prove your right! I paid the fine (£30) rather than having to take the day off!

AlanM
I was charged as the cop thought 4 of my 5 digits were a mm underwidth. I refused to pay the fine and opted to go to court (cos I knew it was import legal) The procurator fiscal threw the charge out
