OBD-1 or OBD-2

The VVTI car doesn't have a particularly common OBD II protocol, so not all fault code readers will work. It has an OBD II labled port on the panel down under the steering wheel.

You may be able to read some codes yourself using this method on the diagnostics port in the engine bay. You'll be bridging either E1 and TE1 or Tc and E1.
