Is it just me or is this the usual process for buy stuff from the net? .....

  1. Need item, don't have time and can't be arsed to trawl round the shops and deal with 'couldn't give a toss' assistants.
  2. Search net, do your research, order item
  3. Wait for item to arrive
  4. Wait some more.
  5. "Sorry you were out when we tried to deliver. Please collect it from our sorting office which is only open while you're at work"
  6. Eventually get item home.
  7. Item is crap quality or broken/doesn't work.
  8. Send message to the seller.
  9. Wait for reply
  10. Wait some more.
  11. Seller replies "try this .... (insert nonsense procedure not related to the reported problem)"
  12. Send message to say "Still not working"
  13. Wait for reply
  14. Wait some more.
  15. Seller replies "Send it back for inspection"
  16. Send message to say "To what address?, FFS!"
  17. Wait for reply
  18. Wait some more.
  19. Send it off.
  20. Weeks later you will have heard nothing.
  21. The seller will then not reply to emails.
  22. Eventually give up and throw the item away
  23. Start process over again from the beginning.

I usually order stuff to my work address, to avoid the "You were out when we tried to deliver". However, that still happened for the last thing I ordered - because despite taking the correct delivery address, they kept trying to deliver it to my billing address and I ended up with a 20 mile round trip to collect it.

Oh - and a week later, PC World slashed their prices and started selling it £20 cheaper than I'd paid anyway!

The morale of the story is to choose wisely from who you buy from.

If in any doubt look for phone numbers on the site, look up 'companies' and see if they're registered with companies house. Check domain name matches this company. Search the company or website name in Google for other complainers etc. etc.

If a product is significantly cheaper than everywhere else on the net be very wary. Ring/email first to check stock.

If it's only slightly cheaper than a larger trusted web retailer, but it from the larger known company.

Of course if it's something REALLY impossible to find then you won't have much choice but to trust them....ALWAYS use a credit card with adequate insurance.
