Benzsupra
Hi, In an attempt to diagnose the rattling noise from the front of my car i've taken the brake caliper apart to see if it's the pads rattling in them. Now i've done this i'm still none the wiser! I've put a picture in can anyone tell me if something is missing that would cause a rattle? When i was looking at how to remove the calipers i noticed a metal thing that sits behind the pad and this appears to be absent... Maybe the cause? I've also heard it could be the drop links so i've put a pic of that in too so if anyone knows they can tell me if that might be the cause. There doesn't seem to be any play in the link at all. Thanks everyone. Brake pad. Drop link.
RobSheffield
Find the part number for the 'metal thing' and order and fit Impossible to tell from pics if the drop links are worn. They don't cost that much from Toyota, order some and fit, its only going to help on a 12 year old car
rick001
The metal thing is the anti-rattle shims that dont appear to be there. Order some fromToyota and slot in - hope this helps
Guest Budz86
Anti-squeal shims will only cost about £20, ordered and fitted some at the weekend. But the absence of them won't cause rattling, more a squeaking noise. Worth replacing them though as it might help

Guest Budz86
Anti rattle? is this something different from the anti squeal?
Tricky-Ricky
Anti rattle? is this something different from the anti squeal? OK anti rattle shims are usually spring loaded and stop the pads moving backward and forward in the callipers, anti squeal are clipped to the back of the pads and help stop the vibration between the pads and pistons on braking. Benzsupra
UPDATE: I just had both wheels off for a comparison because i only get a rattle from one side. What i found was that on the drivers side the part of the caliper you can lift to change the pads seemed to wobble alot if i grab hold of it and move it side to side but the passenger side one seems much more sturdy. Anyone have any idea why this might be?
merckx
Are all of these present? Red arrow: Anti rattle springs. Green arrow: Pad support plates.
Benzsupra
All the green arrow parts are there, only one of the red arrow parts is present on each caliper and there are none of the parts labeled 47745 & 47744.
merckx
none of the parts labeled 47745 & 47744. These are the anti-squeal shims, they don't stop the pads from moving around, you don't always need to have them fitted.

Well i assume that's why they're not there and i wouldn't have thought that little metal clip would make much difference, i have one in either side anyway. It does worry me though the amount of movement in the caliper when it's all in place exactly like the other one. Not too sure if this would make the rattle though, i'm even more confused now than before i started messing around with it! It's just funny that i get no rattle if i put the brakes on even lightly... Benzsupra
After talking to some people it looks like the brake sliders have gone in one caliper and apparently you can get a maintenance kit to repair this. Question time again.... Does anyone know the part numbers or anywhere i can get this quite quickly in the uk or am i gonna have to go down the import from Japan route? I've got j-spec breaks obviously. Thanks guys.
