MaveriK
At the moment apparently you can smack your child as a punishment but not to the extent you leave a bruise. Our smashing government are voting to relieve you of this option. If they do I hope they reduce medical costs as I will have to have extensive throat reconstruction from having to repeat "No Alannah", "Alannah stop that" and "Alannah get that out of your mouth"

hogmaw
I will have to have extensive throat reconstruction from having to repeat "No Alannah", "Alannah stop that" and "Alannah get that out of your mouth" Have you tried "No Alannah, you'll hurt yourself", "Alannah stop that, it's dangerous" and "Alannah get that out of your mouth or you'll do yourself an injury" Kids don't like being ordered about for no reason

Perhaps it would be a good idea if the Government moved their cameras into our homes to check we don't break any laws there... (Government) makes me sick - everybody knows whats a "smack" and whats unacceptable. I'd like to give Gordon a "smack"

A "comedy" sketch so puerile as to be risible, yet has enraged the Phillipine government into near apoplexy, because it was insulting to Phiilipino women, showing them as sexually base. This coming from the government of one of the sex trade hot spots of the world.... Then the banks are effectively nationalised, so instead of being ripped off by some effette city boys vying for their next bonus we get shafted by the "prudent" Mr. Brown who has surreptiously borrowed our way, and encouraged the borrowing by the man on the Clapham omnibus to near bankruptcy. Finally I read some "Ms" single parent mother of a bastard child eulogising about how teachers should be no longer held criminal for sex with 16 year old pupils. Enough to test even the stoutest constitution.

benkei
This makes no sense... This country is in the state it's in with young people shooting and stabbing each other because they have no discipline, so we are going to help the situation by stopping discipline from an earlier age?! We don't hit kids for fun (well, not most of us anyway) it's for the child's benefit. I've seen countless parents’ attempt to tell their child off in the most pathetic, unauthoritive half-assed voice, and surprise surprise - the child takes no notice! I remember when I was a kid, my mum picked me up after school and on the way home I ran across the road in front of a car. Luckily the car stopped in time and no one was hurt, but my mum smacked me and told me the error of my ways. Needless to say I always cross the road with caution up until this day. Yeh, she could have just shouted at me, but I don't think it would have had as big an effect as it didn't hurt too!! I wonder how long it'll be before you're not allowed to look at anyone else in case they get offended? Eyes on the ground people! If we're going to be oppressed, we may as well look it! tbourner
It's the main reason I don't want kids, because I'm not allowed the freedom to raise them in the way I see as correct. We're getting dogs instead. If you were allowed to put prong collars on kids I wouldn't get as stressed as I do in Asda!!!!

Well said sir! Taking away more powers from authority figures (teachers/police/parents) will NOT help. We all know there are some bad eggs among those authority figures, but banning everyone from administering physical punishment (a smack etc) will not help the smacker or, in the long run, the smackee. You wouldn't ban all cars just because there are some on our roads that are illegal and unroadworthy. The NSPCC makes me angry somtimes. They've been running a campaign for quite some time that seems to have a zero-tolerance attitude to smacking. Well, they can take care of all the children then when they lose respect for authority and society and turn into chavs.

Ace
A sad indictment of the way our so-called government are warping society with topsy-turvy notions and ideas with inverted or warped logic. A combination of the OTT Human Rights Act (and brigade), compensation culture and the urge to be politically correct and un-offensive is snuffing the life out of what was a perfectly acceptable place to live in. Just my tuppence worth.
ManwithSupra
If there is no discipline from an early age then the world will be chaos. I got a few smacks when i was a kid and they were called for! Tell you what i never did the wrong thing twice, kept me on the stright and narrow. Discipline from an early age not only stops you for messing things up time and time again it also promotes RESPECT something that alot of kids dont have these days !! For example i was walking back from the car park in the summer this year when a group of about 10young kids must have been 8 years old starting shouting obscene swear words and abuse at me for no reason, then started throwing stones at some other cars, I started to walk over to them shouting "who are your parents" but and they ran off still shouting abuse. No respect for anyone or anything - its terrible.
JustGav
Human rights are earned by showing respect, NOT given! These days there aren't many human beings out there that deserve rights, but it seems those that show no respect for others have more human rights. I'm not going to comment too much on this thread, because I have some (apparently) old-school values including corporal punishement and the like. Hell I had it at school, and it taught me 1 of 2 things a) Don't do X, or b) Don't get caught doing x.

Hopefully it'll never happen.
peter richards
think of the teachers , they must have a nightmare of a job keeping any order in the classroom. kids are fearless these days confident they wont get a smack or be reprimanded . i still blame that goofy slapper esther rantzen she started all this off 10 years back , and look now at what shes achieved , total disrespect
