Suspension types - REAS

Hi guys

Can anyone tell me what the REAS suspension system on the Supra is, and how do you tell whether your car is equipped with it or not?

Reason for asking, was browsing TRD suspension catalogue, and notice they have some nice kit for non-REAS cars. Has anyone fitted TRD suspension sets? What about their exhaust system too?

I have the feeling TRD stuff is good quality, probably not so good as TTE...and I think TRD rebadge some 3rd party stuff, but don't know what exactly...the shocks could be Bilsteins tho.

(ramble, mutter, ramble...)

Isn't REAS on the MKIII?

The TRD stuff is good and will not affect your warrenty as its approved by Toyota, but its very expensive for what it is.

Branners reckons he's got TRD springs and rates them.

I would like a set of their anti roll bars as I think the Supra pitches and rolls in corners too much.

Yep, Im pretty sure its TRD springs on my car. They came off Leons car when he went to coilovers. Compared to the Eibachs they are in a different league. Probably about as stiff as the Eibachs but they keep the car at a more even stance (not nose down like the Eibachs) and I can now throw the car through corners without any concerns as to what the front or back end will do.

Not sure how much they cost though. Im also on Toyota Bilsteins which seem good.

REAS is on the much later models, ie 98 upwards. Theres something about it in the 2000 sales brochure on mkiv.com. The suspension on the mkiiis was TEMS wasnt it?

Dunno how much you want to spend on suspension, but I would highly recommend the Whiteline kit if you want to go the "whole hog" - for about £700/£800 you get absolutely everything, including anti-roll bars, bushes etc and it makes the Supra a different car!

...and no I'm not on commission!

I had the Whiteline handling kit on my Celica GT-Four, including roll bar, etc - made a good improvement, I agree.

Alex - what suspension do you have? Still on original shocks/springs? I find my Supra runs well on the standard suspension, don't think I need the rollbars (yet), but then the shocks were replaced by Toyota ones in the last year or two.

Good to know the TRD stuff is quality - have you tried track days with them, Branners?

Wasn't REAS the system Toyota developed by looking at Motorcycle suspension technology? Think they bought the rights to the design from one of the jap Manufacturers - It adjusts the rate of damping in diagonally opposite shock absorbers dependant on cornering load to give better handling. It does this by use of pipework between the shocks which fluid flows through.

I may just be talking crap.............

Just dug up some info on it - Toyota licensed the technology from Yamaha and the acronym of REAS stands for "RElative Absorber System". Here's a short blurb:

"In 1997 Toyota introduced REAS which connected the left and right shock absorbers to a central cylinder allowing oil to pass between the two sides. As a result, the rolling is controlled, there is increased stability for even better cornering. "

I've just got tired OEM Bilsteins with stock springs.

My track day experiences have stopped me running on track days for the moment (combined with the fact that Im knackered for cash), so I havent really tried them out.

If you look at the handling circuit times from 10 of the Best I think I was up there with the other Supra guys and that was on a bone stock engine so I would say it handles pretty damn well, I also only did 2 runs, 1 to know where the track went and the second to put in a benchmark time. Didnt even try that hard :)
