What's it worth: dodge challenger

Really good, rust free 70's big block manual Challengers seem to attract asking prices of astronomic amounts. Whether they actual get these figures for them I don't know. I think the ones that DO fetch strong money are all numbers matching 440 hemi heads, manual, with a full provenance. What I can tell you is they are absolute rot boxes, and some of the trim that's available new still is very expensive. Pretty shape, and enough of an American classic for Chrysler to bring out a retro version, albeit emission strangled and grossly overweight.

Prices might have changed in the last few years, but I think you should be looking at over £7k if it's a genuine rot free car, considerably more if it's got the correct 440 in there. Even in the US an average 440 will cost upwards of $25k. However, it would have to be extremely cheap to risk buying without the log book, what sort of price are you talking about?

Chris is right about the parts, you MUST factor those into the cost. Trim, sheet metal, bright work, etc is very expensive to replace and most needs to be ordered from the US.

i would would say to try and calculate the amount its going to cost you to fully restore it. hope for the best and prepare for the worst. if you think its going to cost and arm and leg to fix it all up then theres no point buying in the first place. if you have deep pockets and want to spend the money then i would say get a better condition one with the log book which will have less hassle and work on it for you to do.

£1200

It is apparently rot free apart from some surface rust on the bonnet.

Whats your plans with the car, to restore, just to use or just for the engine? If its the third one then surely the lack of log book isnt an issue. Given the prices people are talking about above then 1200 might be worth a punt regardless of lack of docs, then you can sort it out as your leaisure :)

That "apparently" could be the difference between a bargain and a scrapper. I nearly bought a bullnose firebird a few years ago that was "apparently" rust free, when the guy went to pick it up with some fork lifts the car litterally snapped in half, the chassis was rotted out.

These cars can hide major (and I mean major) rust issues without much apparent external signs. You'd really want to be tearing that thing apart to see what's there before considering buying it.

Does it still have the motor and drivetrain? It could still make a superb donor if the 440 is in there! They are worth quite a bit of money in themselves.

Quite honestly, for £1200 I'd take a risk on this one. The Challenger is worth a lot more than the Charger I thought you were talking about :D

What are the reasons for no log book?

Yet to find that out, really want to go see it on saturday and find out all about it.

Primarily restore.

Yeah, luckily on this one it was to be used as a drag car so all carpets and everything has been stripped out so it should make it easier to look for rot.

But like I said, I would like to get up there on saturday to have a good scour round it and have all my q's answered.
