Whats the problem ?

Long story but will try to keep it as brief as I can.

Mate has a C270cdi 2003 60K on the clock. It has developed a hot start problem. Basically when warm it just doesnt fire regardless of how much cranking it gets. Give it a wiff of bradex and instantly fires up. From cold it starts although he has noticed that since the hot start problem it takes a little more cranking and time to fire up.

He took it to his local independant Merc guy who determined that he had a couple of heater plugs down and these were replaced. So this seemed to explain the slower cold start but not the hot start problem. The same garage said that as far as his diag gear would tell him the hot problem was down to the common rail losing pressure and thought it could be down to a gasket on fuel valve connected to the rail (stock fault). However it wasn't. They said then that it would have to go to a main dealer for the full diagnostic check.

This was done and they said one of the injectors was not holding the pressure and that the cure was a new set of injectors as they are not supplied as singles and a new (and wait for this) inection pump and associated pipework at a total cost of around £1.4k:blink: They say that the original injectors have been superceded and now the replacements have to be fitted with the matching uprated pump and pipework. Does this sound right?

I know nothing about mercs and don't pretend to, but I if the rail is losing pressure when hot why does it not start after cranking and presumably re-pressurising? Surely that is what happens when the next day when the engine is cold and it then starts or am I missing something? Also why does it start fine and more to the point carry on running when hot if it has ether sprayed up it? Is it like my old 6 series and does it wait for the engine to fire up on the fuel in the rail before the ECU powers up the pump maybe, but if that's the case why does it fire and tun from cold without the snort? :search:

I suggested he had the injectors removed and took them to a Bosch centre and had them serviced. He understandably is concerned that if he does this he could be at the same place in a few months as he hasn't gone ahead with the mod for new injectors and pump.

Any ideas, suggestions welcome. Cheers.

Difficult to comment without knowing the exact specification of FIE used. I'me not familiar with the Merc setup but have been involved with this field.

He could do alot worse than giving Carwoods (Smethwick/Coventry) a call and asking for their advice/service. I used to deal with one of the partners their and have looked around their facilities. They have good experience with FIE and be in a better position than most dealers. They are capable of servicing and testing all the components.

FIE from the dealer is expensive. The price for injectors and pump looks OK, although I do not Know why the pump has to be replaced. Dealers tend to just replace parts until the problem goes away as diagnostic time is difficult to charge for.

Either the CPS sensor which is prone to breaking down when hot (located near starter motor) or One of the injectors ,though any garage should be able to do a leakback test to determine which one. You should be able to get single injector, line and seal over on the MBClub UK
