Thorin
I was going to reply to this statement but then decided it would be so impolite that it would most likely offend and i would hate to complicate things further for one with so little understanding> Was that a rather lame attempt at an insult? SupraStar 3000
How could we refuse Gurkhas into the country that have fought with us, yet let people in who clearly can't or wont contribute to the county is beyond me. Thanks god that rule was overturned.
mwilkinson
Very pleased to hear this. They are a brave and proud people and despite how we have treated them in the past they still consider it one of the highest rewards to serve in the UK Forces. I am ashamed that it has taken so long for those who have fought along side us in the pursuit of our freedom to only now be given the recognition they deserve for their sacrifices. (Sorry for the American type feel to this statement) I believe including British Officers that in total the Gurkhas have won 26 VC since their inception following the Indian Mutany of 1857 when they became part of the British Indian Army after having served sine 1817 with the East Indian Company Army. Thats got to count for something!!
Konrad
Aren't they some kind of mercenaries tho? I always tought, they are born to be learnt how to fight and then serve in army for a proper money.
ivan
??? So where did you dig that snippet up from?
Konrad
Just got proper check, they WAS mercenaries, but under present-day international law their are integral part of UK Army. So as such, I think they fully deserve UK citizenship.
ivan
S'funny, I always thought mercenaries were soldiers for hire who fought for whoever paid them, not people who actually joined a legitimate army! So were the Poles who flew alongside the RAF during the war mercenaries too?
Konrad
Poles was fighting as a RAF regiment against common enemy of UK and Poland - Germans. They did this, as at that days regular polish army did not exist and polish soldiers was part of of allied armies (although they had their own identity). Gurkhas was British army ENEMIES during Nepal War, they got respect of British Army because their kicked their arse during this war even being heavily outnumbered. They got hired by British Army later on because of their fighting skills. http://www.experiencefestival.com/a/Gurkha_-_History/id/1446841

Thanks god that rule was overturned. Nothing was overturned, the government have only said they will look at these cases again. That will most likely take so long that most of the people it could benifit will be dead anyway, meanwhile we will continue to let the worlds dross into our country to be a burden on the system and like many other countries keep decent hard working people at arms length waiting for visas.
