AndyT
Fantastic isn't it? Two good bits actually. 2. Home Office pr1cks get their 4sses handed to'em too. I couldn't believe, inthis day of ultra careful pc correctedness, that the HO could get away with that travesty for so long. Well done High Court Judge. SteveR
The Gurkhas acted on behalf of the British army to provide support for a 450km Hilmalaya charity cycling trip I was on a few years ago. Brilliant guys.

SteveR
Bet your stabilisers took a hammering on that trip Steve As others have said should never have been an issue I fell off at high speed, somersaulted over the bike then it over me, and broke my wrist at some point during the fall/roll/owch. Still rode the next day!

garethr
Funny thing, democracy. I reckon you'd be hard put to find anyone in this country who doesn't think that anyone (particularly the Ghurkas) who would fight with our armed forces should automatically be offered British citizenship, or at least residency, but it takes a court case to make it happen. I reckon you'd be hard put to find anyone in this country who does think that it's a good idea to fine people for, say, slightly over-filling a rubbish bin, but it's happening more and more. . Andy-No-Knee
After the ruling, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said the rules would be rewritten. "In light of the court's ruling we will revise and publish new guidance," she said. "We will honour our commitment to the Gurkhas by reviewing all cases by the end of the year." The Ministry of Defence made no comment on the ruling. Two faced old bag.... "We will honour our commitment to the Gurkhas..." If they had bothered to do that in the first place then a court case would not have been necisary, but hey.... what do the ZaNuLab apparatchiks know of honour? http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2008/sep/12/military.defence What makes my blood boil is the fact that this PC Govt can consider that scum, shirkers and fundimentalists do have a right to live here and have "shown strong ties to the United Kingdom" but the soldiers who have helped keep the UK German/Nazi/Russian/Commuinist etc free have "failed to demonstrate strong ties to the United Kingdom". WTF????????

The Ministry of Defence made no comment on the ruling. There's still a long way to go yet. That was just a test case to prove that the Govt did act illegally in discriminating against the Gurkhas. We now need to put even more pressure on the Govt to establish FULL rights for them. Here is an email I have received with a statement from Joanna Lumley:- --------------------------------------------------------------- Although the Gurkhas won their test case in the Appeal Court today (Tue 30th September 2008), there is still a long way to go to have the law changed. Please sign the petition. http://www.gurkhajustice.org.uk they're looking for 12m signatures . I've signed. --------------------------------------------------------------- The Gurkha Justice Campaign Gurkhas are fighting for Justice. They want the same terms and conditions as their UK and Commonwealth counterparts. Britain has had no greater friends than the Gurkhas. They have served all across the world in the defence of our Country for nearly 200 years. Over 45,000 died in the two World Wars as part of the British Army. They are still fighting in the British Army today. You may have seen in the media that they are fighting in Parliament and the Courts. Step by step, things are getting better - but there is a long way to go. Today, we expect judgement from the High Court as to whether their treatment has been unlawful in terms of the right to live in the UK if they retired before 1997. Whatever the High Court decides today, the Government has to change the law on how it treats Gurkhas. We demand the full, fundamental change in law that will allow all retired Gurkhas the right to live here. By signing up above you will be expressing your support for all Gurkhas. You will be signing our petition, and we will be able to contact you in the future as we mount the largest ever campaign to get them the Justice that they deserve. Join me in the campaign: together, we can finally right this wrong. Joanna Lumley

Thorin
Congratulations to them. However, I don't understand why there has been such uproar about this. Just because they helped fight with our armed forces shouldn't mean they automatically get to retire over here if they want. It's a nice gesture that they should be allowed yes, but I don't see why people should have got so upset over it. In summary then, not in my name. ivan
They're only after what other non-British soldiers who serve with our Armed Forces already get Michael. For example, if a Canadian joins up and spends just a few years in our Army he then gets an automatic right to settle here if he so desires. The "uproar" you speak of just shows how many people think it's unfair, even if you don't.

Well I wasn't aware of that. The cannucks shouldn't get it either then.

I was going to reply to this statement but then decided it would be so impolite that it would most likely offend and i would hate to complicate things further for one with so little understanding>
