BigDino
The ignition barrel is shafted can you changed the barrel over without changing anything else or do you need to change the ecu too as the key has a chip in it???? Its an R reg corolla 1.6 if that helps?
adnanshah247
you dont have to change the ecu i think. the chip in the key is for the immobiliser which could be around the steering column somewhere. best thing is to take it to toyota and let them sort it because you dont want to mess up any of the wiring. Jimmer
You can just change the barrel, the key signal is recieved through a white plastic ring around the barrel housing. IIRC when you buy a new barrel from Toyota you recieve two keys with it which then have to be coded to the ECU. You will then however have different keys to unlock and start the car. If you have the large square black key with two buttons (one raised) then they can be coded to unlock the car aswel. I think thats right, been out the trade a year now so all the knowledge is fading away!
