jacko
Im not sure if my rear wheel bearings could be on their way out. When driving there is quite a loud sort of droning noise, but no squeaks or anything, so is it just that im not used to the road noise from wide tyres? Or could it be the bearings, but i cant hear any sqeaking or scraping noises, which i would normally associate with wheel bearing failure
monkey3
Does the noise change alot when changing direction. For example, if you corner right, if the noise gets loads louder then it could well be a left bearing. Also you could narrow it down with accelerating \ braking to the back \ front. If it's just a whirring noise that gets louder up to a point and then may go away, it could be a knackered tyre. Do you have decent tyres on the car? If not, why not? oh, also if the noise gets to squeaking \ scraping and it's a bearing, and you're still driving it, then you're either mighty brave... seriously, bearing whirring means you need a new bearing, bearing squeaking \ scraping means you've got a matter of minutes \ metres of bearing \ car left. jacko
I wouldnt drive my car if the bearing was scraping or squeaking, but i have heard the noise before so i know what it is like
monkey3
Right-o Well, like I said if the noise changes alot when cornering, then it's more than likely a bearing. If it's a constant noise (pretty much) at a constant speed regardless of cornering, then it's more than likely tyres. What tyres have you got out of interest? Are they really old? jacko
They arent old, but they arent a brilliant make. I will be changing them as soon as i can, but im just buying a house, so moneys a bit tight. Theres plenty of tread on them, but i know that cheap tyres are often noisy
monkey3
Yes, that's the case... And tell me about it on the house buying... I would definitely be careful on rubbish tyres though. As a friend of mine always said to me: 3 most important things on a car are tyres, brakes and steering. Try some cornering anyway, doesn't have to be fast. Just a bit of right hand and a bit of left hand.
jacko
Oh i totally agree, i have always ran either Toyos, Eagle F1's etc... but i bought a set of new 18's that came with tyres, so im just using them until i can afford to upgrade. To be fair they arent too bad, a bit twitchy in the wet, but i think thats more to do with the 3 litres and 2 turbos lol

Matt _Aero top_
Which side of the car is it coming from ? And i know this sounds stupid but you didn't have the radio on did you with the electric ariel up ?
jacko
Just sounds like a general drone from the back and no i didnt have the electric aerial up as my radio doesnt work lol
robin
If its just a drone then its likely road noise. With big wide tyres there’s a lot more noise. If its a bearing the noise changes as the load changes like monkey says. Try jacking the car up and rotaiting all the wheels by hand; If they feel rough or notch and the pads aren’t touching the disk then the bearings are likely to be at fault. If you can grasp the wheel and wobble it slightly then it’s very very dead but I think you would know about it if they were that bad. Luka-P
Just jack the car up, grab a wheel and give it a shake. If it wobbles, your bearing is going or close to gone.
