DaveK
Don't get hung up on contrast ratio - it's a fairly meaningless number and certainly shouldn't affect your choice of set. I agree with the people who've said plasma is preferable to LCD. I previously had a Panasonic LCD - which I bought at almost exactly the same time that my mate bought a Panasonic plasma, and his was clearly superior. I now have a Pioneer plasma - which is better again.
Pig
Rather you than me. I normally just go to Curry's, Sony or something like that and buy the biggest well known make i can afford. Dont you wish there was a techno geek on here that could simply say this is the one you want.
AdzC
I have a Panasonic Viera that I bought last year. Model is TH42PZ70 and is a lovely set. I got it to replace the Philips LCD which I had three of as each set was faulty. I would recommend the Panasonic TH42PZ81

Whitesupraboy2
I had a massive debate with a friend who sells TV's the other day. So i hope what i type is usefull. I have a samsung and said its really good. He then went on to explain why they are just average. It all comes down to the TV source basically and a TV's software. He demonstrated at his house, he has a virgin HD box. So he set the box to standard output and on normal scart lead, the picture looked quite good to be fair. He then used a HDMI cable from the virgin box and set it to upscale and the picture difference was amazing it was like it was true HD (well to me) it was hard to tell difference between BBC HD and BBC1. Bascially the virgin's hardware upscaler was so much better then the TV's software upscaling or line filling. If you dont have a HD box and using maybe the built in freeview you need a TV that can deal with a standard TV source well. So if you have a sky or virgin box and use a HDMI cable you'll be happy no matter what. 1080p is only useful for blu ray discs. Seeing as HD TV is broadcast at a max of 1080i with the norm being 720p so to be honest i believe 1080p to be over rated. http://www.burnyourbonus.info/hdtv-faq/faq2.html

supragold
I've just been through this myself so know what you are going through. My first recommendation is dont buy from currys! If you can wait a week order from dixons online. Dixons and currys are the same people but dixons is LOADS cheaper as they are now only internet based (other than dixon digital) currys are not allowed to match their prices. Also you get free delivery if you put in discount code "Del299" well that code worked for me but you can view other codes on http://www.myvouchercodes.co.uk I was looking for a 37" LCD not a 42" so i cant give you product numbers but the best were LG an Samsung by far IMO. (Series 6 in both) Just make sure it is 1080p not 1080i as p is alot better. I wont go into why. lol. Also the higher contrast ratio the better but manufacturers do bend the truth a little on what they genuinely have so 30,000:1 may not actually be a better picture than a 20,000:1 you'll have to make your own mind up which looks better. I ended up going with a 37LG6000 which seemed the best for the money i wanted to part with.
