which lcd

Assuming that 42" is the correct size for your viewing distance I'd go for a plasma at that size rather than an LCD.

I'd go for the Panasonic TH-42PX80 at about £700. It's a very good quality unit with great visuals priced a good deal less than, say, the equivalent from Pioneer.

As with most units these days though you'll only get really good sound for a dedicated amp/speaker set-up.

Saying Samsung means nothing. What specific model do you rate? They do vary considerably.

If someone asked "which family car shall I buy?" you wouldn't just say Ford. At least I'd hope not. You'd say Ford Focus or the like.

Do they? Saying Samsung and 1080p actualy narrows the search criteria down considerably, as Sumsung only have 1 (possibly 2) 1080p LCD/Plasma TV's per size.

Unless you meant Vicky's post.

Looking at the Samsung site I can't see that they do any 42" lcd units. It appears to be 40" or 46" only.

Definitely Panasonic. My dad has the PX70 and its a great piece of kit. I just got the PX800 and even though its overpriced its fantastic. The PX80's are great value for money.

Samsung are the best bang for your buck but if you can spare the cash go for Panasonic or Pioneer (not sure about the sizes for pioneer as i couldn't afford it).

Toshiba all the way.

Ive got a top spec Tosh 42Z3030D. Absolutley fantastic!!. The model must be about 10months old now so still reletivley new, but if Tosh are revising their range, you many be able to pick one up cheap.

Dont buy from the highstreet. This store is excellent

Panasonic Viera or Toshiba.

I looked long and hard at the Samsung but thought that the sound quality was awful. On my Panasonic 25% volume is loud enough. The samesung had to be turned up to about 75% to even hear the thing........

Are Panasonic still offering 5 year guarantees??

No, unfortunately. You can get a 5 year guarantee but only from certain vendors. John Lewis is one of them. You pay a bit extra but not the difference in price between other companies offering the 5 year guarantee for a price.

Get a catalogue and play "Eeny Meeny Miny Mo".......:D It does your head in doesn't it?? I have large purchase syndrome so I have to research everything if I am spending anything over £100.....

As long as I feel that I have got a good deal, I am happy.....:)

Good luck. Why don't you look for an independent stockist as opposed to the big stores. Currys and Comet never seem to be good value to me.

We went to a local place and got a really good deal. Also look at Direct Tv's in Huddersfield on the internet, they'll ship it out to you in a couple of days. They had my Panasonic at about £250less that I paid for mine, although it was a year later.

Any thoughts?

Yeah. The salespeople in the retail barns don't know know what they're on about. You don't what you're on about. So how about just buying the first one you like the look of?

OR.... you could could read up on the differences between LCD and Plasma, viewing distances, how well your choice of input (DVD player etc) will work with the new set (you won't be plugging a cheapo Asda DVD player into it I hope!) and all that other stuff and maybe ask on some dedicated AV sites and then make a decision.

:yeahthat:

The reviews always seem to say Pioneer are the best, but you pay for them, then the Panasonic is the next best option.

I've used http://www.digitaldirect.co.uk a good few times now and they are excellent on price, service and advice :) I have a panasonic 37" viera plasma and wouldn't change it for an lcd of the same price. Also remember that you need decent input equipment, and i for one hate sky's scart socket as its just not good enough :( but i'm not paying out for the sky HD box.

Hdmi enabled media pc is the way forward :)
