Mike M
Anyone know if a 53 plate T sport Yaris is OBDII or III? MIL light come on today and the car drives as normal. After looking into it the light can come on for roughly 1600 reasons if it OBDII. Cheers Mike

simbasupra
I take it you have not tried to read the code(s) yet?
Mike M
Nah, dunno how yet. I think you can use the paperclip method but still trying to find details.
JamesC
The girlfriend has one of these and the light kept coming on for the o2 sensor, apparently a common fault. She bought a code reader for something like £20. Works with loads of cars too In fact THIS is the one she has. Sure shoe only paid £20 for it though. I looked at that one on another site but wasn't sure if it was compatible after reading on here about the VVTI supes not working with many readers, thanks for confirming. I think i'll be best to get one seeing as MR T charges £80 just to check the codes. Did you have to change out the O2 sensor? This ones only done 19k so i'd be abit disappointed if it is this. Thanks:) Mike
TRD DAN
it will be an o2 sensor or air flow meter i could place a fair bet on it
Mike M
Surely it would run like crap with a faulty MAF, Anyways the EFI fuse has been pulled and this has done nothing so time to get a reader. Cheers Mike
simbasupra
it will be an o2 sensor or air flow meter i could place a fair bet on it I would go with a 90% chance of it being an o2 sensor. Shame your in scotland, i would have checked it for you for free.

Thanks:) Mike Yeah the Yaris is ODB II so most of the readers work although i *think* there are different variants. Yeah hers was the o2 sensor, we tried a couple of the cheap sensors off Ebay but they were rubbish so going to order a genuine one from Nic because the sensor is £120+Vat from Mr. T

Mike M
no they dont funnily enough , worst case they go a bit flat through the rev range but dont actually run $#@!ty I did think it was a little unwilling to rev for a VVTI but put it down to the car being new to us. I'll post up my findings once I get the code reader.
Mike M
Managed to pull code P0420 = Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank #1). I've reset it and all is back to normal. I'm sure I seen this code somewhere else saying that if it keeps coming on then an ECU software update is required. (god knows how thats done) i'll keep an eye on it over the next couple of days. JamesC
Yep thats the same code she keeps getting. Where did you see that about the ECU update? I've just ordered a o2 sensor off Nic to try and sort it.
Mike M
Aha, found it way down the bottom of the page under recalls. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm?md=394 Possibly be something to look into but I dont know how accurate that info is. Mike M
Oh well, code came back today so I removed the MAF and gave it a clean as it was black with dirt all around the temp bead. Going to get some electrical cleaner and spray clean the two tiny wire sensor part.
JamesC
Do you think that could cause that error code? Let me know if it makes any difference
Mike M
Will do mate, its done 40mile so far no troubles. I spoke with my usual mech who I trust with the Supra and one of his helping hands works for Mr T so I've to give him a call back on Wed and see if he has any suggestions. The MAF is an easy check for dirt its only two screws and a connector. Use some cotton buds and some sort of alcohol cleaner I used her nail polish remover but only on the temp bead. Mike M
Well after speaking with my mech he says usually its the MAF thats the problem and just needs cleaning but to be sure you need the car connected up to get live data from the O2 sensors to see whats happening. I cleaned up the MAF using electronics spray cleaner and the light come back on the next day instead of the usual five so its going in to MR T on Sat for diagnosis. I'll keep this updated to let you know.
JamesC
I checked the MAF after your last post but hers was clean. I'll let you know if the new sensor makes any difference when i get it!
Mike M
Toyota looked at the car yesterday and were just going to send my g/f away with the light reset and see if it came back on so she had a little word. Basically they said they couldnt find anything wrong following toyotas procedures and the O2 voltages were fine but they think the CAT needs changing. Surely if the CAT was knackered then the downstream O2 sensor would be oscillating BUT its a warrantly job hopefully so they can change bits all they want till its fixed.
