2JZ into a trans am?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, be easy on me so this is my first post.

I've currently just removed the 5.0 out of my 77 trans am (yes, like in smokey and the bandit lol) and was planning on putting an ls1 in.

However today at work i was put in touch with a collegue who is a supra fan and attempted to covince me to 2jz instead.

I'm very mechanically minded, used to be a trained porsche mechanic and engine builder, and im no stranger to engine swaps.

With regards to getting the engine in the car which is no issue, how much hassle am i looking at to get it running in mine.

simple answers would be great, as its just an idea tat the moment.

thanks guys and great site!

Thanks guys for your kind words.

Contrary to what most people think it doesnt weigh a lot, just over 1500kg. It's got the brakes off a new corvette (6 pots) and a whole list of suspension mods, so with some mods you can really make them into decent handling cars.

Any idea where i can get some info on the wiring, or has anyone got an impartial (dont think il have much use trying for that on here lol) info about the 2jz's and the getrag gearbox? strengths/weaknesses etc

thanks guys

Love the idea - those 70s yanks are becoming classics. YEEE HAAAA!

Check the length of the supra engine - being a 6 pot it is surprisingly long compared with a v8. Should go in though.

You going with a turbo motor (go on you have to).

If your serious I would suggest investing £50 in the full supra owners/repair manuals (see parts section) as they are very comprehensive.

I know what you mean about weight. Modern cars have monster power compared with the 70's but are really weighed down with options and safety gear. Ive got an old 63 chevy boat and it weighs no more than the new mustang...

If you go for it put info on the projects forum.

Have fun

cheers

If you buy an engine with the full engine loom and the ecu, and stick to a manual, using the Getrag box it's mated to in the MKIV it shouldn't be too complex a swap, electronics wise. It's a fairly common swap into Volvo RWD models, for example. On some forum or other the wiring issues are no doubt discussed. You could go auto, but be SURE to get the correct loom for an auto model. Be aware that the main part of the sump is an alloy casting that is only made in one format, be sure the sump and crossmember will co exist happily. Good luck.

Sorry but IMO you are far better off with the LS-1, as i doubt the torque characteristics of the 2JZ are really up to hauling a heavy car like that, yes the Supra is no lightweight, but i think the Trans am is a fir bit heaver.

Agreed.

Having had both, I would go with the Chev Engine. The amount of torque from tickover is a huge benefit.

Glad someone was reading lol.

Now, who are the supra specialists in this country that will know of a 2jz and be able to sell me one if anyone would care to divulge?

thanks

And i wouldnt know that being a Poncho owner? lol.

i thought it would be easier to say "like in smokey and the bandit" rather than "It's like the one in smokey and the bandit, however mines a real 77, whereas that was an 80 with a 77 front end" doesnt exactly have the same ring does it.

Thanks for your helpful input into how to put a 2JZ into an Fbody, you've cleared up a lot. lol.

  • 2 weeks later...

hi sorry my mistake, yes smokey and the bandit came out in 1977, so it was an earlier model transam believe it was (6.6v8), and in smokey and the bandit 2 its the same car as in rocky 2, early 80s model (4.9turbo), different frontend. nice car, always loved them, if i had room and a good garage to keep it in id buy an early transam t-top(6.6v8).
