Bobbeh
The thing about IT is you can never be on top of your game as its always moving. The only thing you can do is try and get qualified in the technologies that people want, Oracle, Cisco, NT/UNIX, or if you're lucky and smart some legacy software that for older systems that people cant replace easily, you can get big bucks in those. As usual, a good computer science degree helps get your foot in the door.
Whitelightning
Great holidays (hot and sandy) Free uniform (always green) IT training (had over £15k worth so far ) Pay is not bad (about 3 times that quoted on this board so far) AND my new job has the line "investigate emerging technologies" which means "has budget to buy toys" - yippeee ! As for quals I would recommend you do IT and IT project management quals (ISEB, PRINCE2, MSCA/MSCE etc), it all adds to your bow when looking for other jobs later. martynb
I'm another one of the seemingly few who do actually enjoy IT - but I would being an IT Director Trouble is like most people I value intelligence and experience above qualifications except if looking for first line helpdesk, when I value intelligence and communications skills above exams instead - I am perfectly happy to train those people. I actually used to be an insurance underwriter in the pre-electric age when there were no personal computers and got the chance to swap careers at the same employer although it meant doing my old job and my new job for 3-4 years which was bloody hard work. Been an interesting ride though and I would say that IT still pays above average just not hitting the peaks at the moment.
JamesC
I also have a degree in computing, graduated last year. However, i'm still not working in the I.T industry as most people want experience - if not the wages are very poor and i cant afford to drop too much as i have a lot of debt One day..... Supragal
Crap isn't it? I got round the low wages straight from Uni by contracting! I'd rather be permy though and actually not have to drag myself into work and infect everyone else when I'm really ill!

Hehe prince2, good excuse for a quality management system.
JamesC
Yeah at the minute i've got a very secure job on an o.k wage for what i do and where i live (£19,500) but it's fairly pap. There aint many i.t jobs up here for people without experience for a good wage, and i REALLY need to pay some debt off - it just seems to be mounting up though
