i am aware that a number of board users are in the IT industry and wondered if anyone could tell me what is the best thing i can get myself trained up in? how long the trasining courses are and where the jobs are would also be something interesting to know

slightly less important, yet interesting nonetheless would be realistic salary expectations!! :D

What makes you ask about IT jobs? If it's the money you're after I'd personally take on another trade altogether. You have to be REALLY good to get paid big in IT these days, and my good I mean years of experience and SME in something difficult like a nasty programming language that some lucky suckers "just picked up" while they were still in nappies etc etc

If I could start again I'd definately opt for a non-IT career but I seem to be stuck in it now :) Sadly it's not the magical career it used to be despite what the ads on telly suggest, the market is saturated with well trained but inexperienced people who are willing to take low wages to get a foot on the ladder, as a result the general salaries have dropped compared to 4 years ago.

There are still niché areas where people can command some good money but by the time you have got trained up the moment has normally passed and it's on to the next big thing, the key is knowing what is due in a year or so but it's a risk.

Storage and capacity management seem to be in demand at present judging by the calls and emails I keep getting, telecoms and voice over IP still seems popular and networking / security jobs are always coming up. I'm currently trying to decide what to specialise in as I'm sick of being a generalist - SMS and Active Directory stuff appeals to me but I'm not sure if it's a big enough area to keep me amused....

Be a plumber, electrican or mechanic - that's where the money is :)

My actual work is in Cisco IP Telephony and IP Contact Centres.

Theres loads of money in it as its a specialist field - wish my bleeding company new it though

Time for a move this year I feel!

Here here! We're just looking at substitutes for ARC and Altitude and the new IP communicator

Thing is, I've met the BT/Cisco people that get paid untold for doing this work and they are total total geniuses at it, it's scary :respekt:

Depends what level you play at.. Software developement and AI are BIG BIG payers. Get a 2/1 or masters in that and youre laffin

I've got a 2/1 IT degree- not bloody s/w development though

I think it was mcanny that said that you just have to be psychic to know what to get into. So true. I was hoping I'd got it right with IPT but it would seem, as I say that you have to be an absoulte genius and qualified to high heaven to get paid loads.

Agreed also, sparkys/plumbers etc are well paid and generally self employed!!

Aye!

Actually met some very nice people from Cisco in the states last year that run the testing within Cisco for all the stuff we use. Very nice people with some good helpful ideas! I had to ask them again if they really worked for Cisco :p LOL!

aint got any degree,

but I'm training up to be an OCP and have over 11 years experience in BPM. From what I've found its the experience which generates the supra funds.

yup experience counts for more than general qualifications now. So many have see the computeach ads on TV they think it's easy.

I lef Uni with a 2/2 started at £12k, i was with the company 2 years said i was leaving and they increased my salary by quite a bit (no meetings no nothing just increased it on the spot) as the I.T. in the company had moved on considerably since i started, they knew they couldn't get someone in who was at the same level as i was when i started.

If i were starting now i'd be a plumber £80 per hr might try being a plumber anyway. Fitted my powershower and it's not leaking 6 months later.

I work in IT, am an IT Manager. I have a degree in Software Engineering and been working in the industry for approx 9 years !

Somedays I wish I did something else, but I do enjoy the job. There is money to be had in IT, but you have to work for it and as a rule work in the city (London).

I don't think salaries in IT are as high as they use to be maybe 4/5 years ago.

It would be interesting to know what people think a high salary is ?
