caliAl
Right, I got brought myself a new PC and thought I would purchase Crysis to see how well it faired against the most demanding game available. So I went in to settings and cranked everything to 'Very high' and set the resolution to 1920 x 1200 but to my surprise my new PC really struggled, in fact at that resolution it struggled with just the 'High' settings. If I run at 1440 x 900 and the setting set to 'High' the game runs perfectly. Brief spec of my PC: Intel Quad-Core 2.5Ghz 4GB DDR2 800MHz RAM Geforce 9800 GX2 24" Monitor Do you think I'm expecting too much from my system with a monitor this size? Could the CPU be the weakest link? It's Play CoD4 at highest setting and 1920 x 1200 resolution without any problems. I feel a bit disappointed
Mike
I don't know anyone who has a PC that can handle Crysis on the highest setting... we had an 'office wide' discussion on this very topic yesterday.... my god, we know how to rock. Our theory is you probably need two graphics cards.
madmunky
You machine the same spec a mine apart from I have 8GB of DDR2 and run Vista x64 but I didnt expect mine to play Crysis. Nothing wrong with your system

madmunky
I can normally get away with High but I cant say i've really played it much
caliAl
Feeling a bit better now. Having never spent over £120 on a graphics card before, I was expecting the 9800 GX2 to be able to handle anything I could chuck at it

Ric
i play mine at 2560x1600 on a 30" at medium everything and AA off, i average 40-50 fps in crysis 8800GTX, 4gb ram, quadcore 2.
DamanC
Hi Res, Hi detail. What do you expect? 3d mark, pc mark - download and run it; http://www.futuremark.com/ Will tell you where you are at.
caliAl
I just ran the Crysis benchmark and got a return of 37 FPS with all setting set to high, no AA and 1680 x 1050. Does this sound fair?
Conrad
Can somebody explain to me how the size of the screen affects the game? I have a HTPC I built with the intention of adding a gfx card at a later date to play games. I doubt I'll be playing any games that require huge resources but just wondered if my 42inch Plasma will affect the quality somehow? Or is it just down to resolution? ShamelessTT
Dude thats a still a pretty crazy res! . I wouldnt be happy with 37fps in any game id lower the res and get more fluidity. Pretty pictrures are one thing, but playability is the main point for any FPS. Ive just looked at the game, i might go buy it now! lol. Apart from the fancy graphics the game itself if fairly average. Probably would not have brought it if I did want to test out my new system. Angarak
Can somebody explain to me how the size of the screen affects the game? To simplify, the more pixels your computer has to render, the more work the CPU/GPU has to do, if they struggle to keep up with demand your FPS will drop. Anything below 25FPS will appear to be laggy to the human eye.
DamanC
Screen size doesn't affect the game, its the resolution. higher res = more pixels to process. Low res and the game will start to look naff on a large screen. Download 3dmark 06 and post your results. Your crysis benchmark sounds about right tbh. Update all your drivers too if you already haven't but run 3dmark first to see the difference.
caliAl
I know the higher the FPS the better, but what FPS would you call a compromise between graphics quality and decent games play
DamanC
Single player, 30+ imo. Personally I do not think graphics has a large part in game play. I played crysis through on a 8800GT (your 9800 is basically one of these just with a different number) and was happy wit the way it performed. I have played superb games where the graphics have not been great (only 1024 x 768) as my system at the time was sub par for the game. but once you get used to fantastic gfx and high res, theres no going back Additionally, to the OP, the best solution is to run dual graphics cards.. if you motherboard has the capability then i would buy a twin gfx card and fit it and then turn up the resolution... DamanC
SLI doesn't show VFM thou?!?!? Al's 9800 GX2 is basically two video cards stuffed together anyway
caliAl
I was just reading on the Nvidia website that you can pair up 2 9800 GTX2. Bet it's a beast but I don't have the cash for that. "Combine a pair of these multi GPU graphics cards with an nForce® 790i motherboard for Quad NVIDIA SLI® technology and get the world’s fastest gaming PC. Plus, an ESA-enabled control panel provides a state-of-the-art interface and HybridPower™ technology* gives you optimal power savings." Bobbeh
Most new games are designed to run on graphics cards that arnt even out yet. I was equally disappointed with the card I bought 4 odd years back now on the games back then.. (need to upgrade - if I still played PC games). Try running top res but knocking the effects down a bit, I bet the frame rate jumps a lot then.
Ric
ive tried SLI, biggest waste of cash for an extra 5fps, and loads more fan noise in my box, biggest killers for GPU, shadows, and shaders, maybe some postprocessing too (motion blurs) the duel core gpus are ok, but nothing beats the new radeon card, Nvidias new ranges of cards just dont cut the mustard anymore
