Can it get much worse!?!?!

Having a bad time with my car lately.

Over the past five weeks:

Failed the MOT on the exhaust. Hole got welded £130.00

Radiator went big-time all over A1M. £750.00 for Rad, fitting and tow home!

Now I've got a clunking from the rear shocks which I'm getting looked at on Weds. Quote of £400 plus fitting.

Tyres are due in another month.

Nearside sidelight's out. How do I get at it?

But now to top it all I'm VERY VERY worried.

I can hear a faint but distinct grumble from the engine compartment.

It's not constant and doesn't seem to vary with load. (I thought/hoped it was the alternator)

I got my crowbar out and with engine running, put it on different locations and listened.

I think I found the source.

I put the crowbar tip on the turbo casing, just rearward of the heat-shield, and I could hear it quite clearly. OH SH**!!

What now???

I could really do with a second opinion. Anyone in Beds/Northants area?

I'm six miles from Santa Pod.

Thanks

Steve

Eh! £400 plus fitting for what? Shocks?

You can get some nice KYB adjustable shocks for £115 each so if this is for stock Toyota ones they are having a laugh I think.

Go to the back of the headlamp and find a small connector located in-line with the sidelight. 90degree twist and this will unlock. Now just retract the plug. It's long, about 6inches, with the bulb attached at the end.

It's fiddly but you can do it with the car in tact (battery and air filter etc) Have you looked yet?

What does that mean? Grumble. Do you mean a low down frequency? Knocking or hum?

I would doubt its the turbos then as they make a hell of a racket under load and even worse when wearing out.

Nice suble tool the crowbar :-)

Hear what? Explain the noise and how it changes with driving etc etc.

Could it just be your exhaust manifold or a damaged exhaust pipe?

Martin - pictures a man driving down a dual carriageway with crowbar out the drivers window strapped to the top of his turbo's and his ear pressed to the other end.

Sound travels much better through solids! Crowbar was suitable!

£400 for Koni's all round, the fitting's extra.

I looked at the back of the lights and could see the connections but the positioning of the sidelight didn't seem to correlate. You saying it's six inches long makes sense now.

The noise is the sound a bearing makes when wearing out. Best way to describe it was a "grumble" I thought. This is why I originally thought it was the alternator.

It's a low grumble that can only be heard when idling, but it only started last week, and when you've had a car a while you get to know all it's quirks and noises, and this is a new noise.

Press the loud pedal and spin the turbo up and the noise just disseminates into the melee of general engine noise.

It's one of those things, when you know something's not quite right.

I hope to god I'm wrong.

Mind you I have a warranty, so I would hope that the turbos will be covered!!!
