JamesC
I have a small leak coming from the back of the gearbox on my 6-speed. I took it to the garage today for them to have a look and i *think* they said it was the main seal where the propshaft goes in. They asked me to get some info from the forum about torque settings, diagrams and whether it was pre-sprung etc. After searching the forum it seems there's two common ones on the back of the box which leak, one which you need a special tool for. I got confused at this point . Do you need the special tool for the selector seal or the propshaft seal? Also, do you have to drop the box to change this seal? They also mentioned they could try some oil seal rejuvenator which could be worth a shot for a couple of quid. Has anyone got any thoughts on this? Thanks
Terminator
The selector seal is a common leak point of the box. Toyota do make a tool for getting the seal out. Most poeple just push the old seal further in and put the new seal on top of the old one. Certainly worked on mine. Can't help on the main rear seal as my leak was cured by fitting the selector seal, so did not need to go further. AFAIK both seals can be done with the box in the car, but it is a lot easier with the box out.
little num
Yeh same as terminator, mine was leaking oil fromthe back and it looks like its coming from the main propshaft seal, reason for this is cause the selector seal wears and then allows oil to drip out onto the propshaft making it look like thats the problem, the selector seal from toyota are about £8 i have a brand new 1 i will post to you for £6 and its also an original seal, very easy to change just push it in over the top of the old 1 and hey presto no leaks. edge
As has been said above, quite a common problem and a quick look to many may thinks its the rear sealas the oil runs down over it. I think you change the selector seal without removing the box from the car but someone may be able to confirm. I done all mine when i changed the clutch. Terminator
When doing the selector shaft seal it is important not to score the selector shaft opening. the area should be perfectly clean before pushing the new seal in place. JamesC
Ok thanks guys i'll get him to check out the selector seal. Anyone think that the seal rejuvenator could cause any damage to the box?
Terminator
Ok thanks guys i'll get him to check out the selector seal. Anyone think that the seal rejuvenator could cause any damage to the box? I doubt it, but I doubt it would do any good either, the selector seal gets alot of action, it just wears away. JamesC
Cheers Terminator! I'll get him to check the selector and suggest putting another seal on top.
