Gear linkage problems

Hi All,

I'm having some issues with the gearlinkage on my 6-speed getrag.

The issues started when I had the clutch changed a few months ago, from standard to an OS Giken. When I got the car back from having the clutch fitted, the linkage didn't feel as tight and positive as it had done, though it seemed to work fine.

After a couple of weeks the linkage had slowly become 'looser' and then one day whilst giving her some beans, 5th gear seemed to disappear from the selection and I nearly inadvertantly dropped it from 4th to 3rd at high revs. Obviously worried I drove the car back home gently, whilst driving home (only 1-2 miles from my house) 2nd gear also didn't feel right to select, as though you can twist the gear stick around while it was in gear.

I spoke to the garage who had fitted the clutch and after some discussion they kindly offered to send a mechanic over to me to have a look.

The chap had a look under the car and said that the only thing they remove when changing the clutch was the bolt holding the bottom of the stick to the linkage. He replaced this bolt with new and said that the old bolt was 'worn'. After fitting the new bolt the gearchange felt a lot better, much more positive but I didn't think it felt quite as it had before. Anyway, happy to be able to use my car again and maybe put the slightly sloppy change down to me being fussy I carried on using the car.

Now several weeks later I have thought the shifter felt like it was loosening up, my thoughts confirmed this morning on the way to work as the gear stick is very loose and me having to concentrate to get some of the gears spot on.

I haven't had a chance to get under the car yet, but can anybody suggest what might be going on here? From what I understand the linkage isn't a very complicated system, and that would have been the only bolt removed whilst changing the clutch. I'm sure the box is ok as no unusual noises from it and it engages gears fine. Just feels like the gearstick isn't connected as well as before or that there's play in a part of it. Are there any bushes that could be causing trouble?

Cheers for any advice :)

Mark.

Did you ever get this resolved im having the same issue

I had a problem on mine when I first got it, the gear level was all lose and I lost reverse gear, the problem was where the control shift lever joins the yoke, when you remove the dust boot under the car right under the gear lever there are some bolts, on mine one of the nuts had come off completely and the others were all loose, once these were tightened up, hey presto, drove better than ever!

Hope its a simple fix like this for you
