paul mac
As a bass player born of the punk generation one of my earliest influences was Barry Adamson of Magazine and its great to see him get a mention on here (for me it has to be Permafrost), i saw them at Lancaster University in 78" or 79" (god how old am i) and this guy spat at him (as was the way in the punk days) Barry had taken quite a few "hits" but finally saw red and kicked this guy full in the face, now Barry is quite a big lad so i saw the guy about 5 minutes later covered in blood and mucus and he appeared to be somewhat of a celebrity !. Others of note for myself were Gail Ann Dorsey and wasted country still stands up well today http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mdXAaG7qL4 she looks quite cute here and what a cracking pair of legs in her cow girl outfit. Also the inevitable Mr King of Level 42 however my attempts at emulation meant i had to buy a cheaper guitar as i was doing some damage to the frets on my beloved 1972 vintage Rickenbacker 4001, happy days

Animal
Some good bass players mentioned in this thread. John Myung & Tony Levin are both supremely talented progressive bassists. Robert Trujillo was brilliant with Suicidal Tendencies and I think is wasted in Metallica. Another one to mention would be Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse. It's easy to overlook him (and the others) as being just noise, but the compositions are actually ridiculously complex. He also writes a lot of the guitar parts as well. Probably my top choice for best metal bassist out there. wKTinvL2I0w
Tannhauser
Got to love those prog rock bassists. I love Geddy Lee's popping, bubbling bass lines and that magnificent nose. B3hJ5-ngUow
Animal
Have you heard and Liquid Tension Experiment? It's Mike Portnoy, Jordan Rudess & John Pertucci from Dream Theater with Tony Levin - some really interesting stuff. http://www.yesiknow.com/lte/
