Konrad
Was going through various news today and found this little one: http://www.fit-pc.com/new/ Looks like nice alternative against some more sophisiticated car audio systems Around 170 pounds for version with Ubuntu preloaded sounds reasonable too There is also dedicated UK site http://www.fit-pc.co.uk/ with fit-PC (suprise suprise) for 199 pounds + vat
JamesC
What would the sound quality be like coming from that? Also would the 500mhz Geode be fast enough? How would this compare to say a normal AMD K6 500mhz processor? Specs: Hardware CPU: AMD Geode LX800 500MHz Chipset: AMD CS5536 Display: Integrated Geode LX display controller up to 1920x1440 Memory: 256MB DDR 333MHz soldered on-board Hard disk: 2.5” IDE 60GB Ports: 2 x RJ45 Ethernet ports 100Mbps 2 x USB 2.0 HiSpeed 480Mbps RJ11 RS-232 (cable supplied) VGA DB15 Stereo line-out audio (headphones) Stereo line-in audio / Mic
Konrad
There is tech spreadsheet on this site. I wouldn't expect this stuff to be lightning speed one, but it should be enough to play mp3/mp4 and be used as a satnav. A lot depends from operating system and drivers used I would believe There is also 512 MB ram version avaliable
JamesC
Just did a quick search on Google and systems such as THIS came up which is a similar price but seem to be higher spec, this one has a 2.2ghz AMD Sempron, 5.1 sound outputs etc. How does a touch screen take the feed to the computer? Edit: THIS one already has GPS, TV and radio built in.
Konrad
Ah but of course there will be more car PC's on the market, I just pointed this one out because of his size, power consumption and reasonable price. I believe that touchscreen is getting connected to VGA port and USB port to be fully functional
ivan
How does a touch screen take the feed to the computer? USB - so that's one of the two available taken up straight away. That means for anything useful (wifi, GPS, camera, memory stick etc) you'll need a powered USB hub too.
JamesC
After having a quick look around last night, it seems there isn't much choice when it comes to getting a double din sized VGA touch screen, unless you want to pay over the top for one. But then i guess it isn't a cheap stereo alternative.
