imi
I was reading today though about a university that has abolished christmas and easter breaks as it may offend muslims. End of term breaks are what they will now be called apparently. Shall we get rid of all traditional things that make/made up the culture of our country? Thats the thing, it MAY however reality is that it doesnt. Anyway, if it brings us more into the media then that is surely a good thing...... imi
*throws on a fresh bucket of fuel* - as always TBH I can't see what the fuss is about. The Sharia "courts" will have no jurisdiction over anybody without their consent. It will only apply to parties that are seeking a form of arbitration that cannot be sought anywhere else because of the individuals religious beliefs. It does not, and never will supercede any laws of England & Wales or those imposed on us by the EU and IMO the typical knee jerk reaction expressed by some on here just goes to show what an ignorant, intolerant society we live in. The Beth Din (Jewish Courts) have existed for some considerable time in this country, yet I don't see anyone calling heracy because there is a court in existance which is seperate to HMCS. Muslims first settled in the UK over 400 years ago, the first mosque was built over 140 years ago. I expect that there has been some form of Sharia one way or another, but by having it recognised officially means that its findings can be monitored and recorded instead of it being underground, causing yet more mistrust. These courts will not affect 99.99% of people but at least it is there now officially for those that cannot seek redress elsewhere. Great post there buddy, spot-on - but hey, doesn't feed the fire that some members enjoy fueling.......
marbleapple
Planned on leaving this thread alone but I’m a moth to a flame. Religion is only for the weak minded (or if you are brought up in a religious family, the brain-washed from birth). Didn't know you were an expert in psychological reasoning in relation to religious views Homer? - Interesting argument which I suspect has a lot of holes in it. In fact its really a statement with no factual or evidential basis to it at all. One might argue that those who refuse to consider/accept that there might be something of greater importance/power than themselves are those that are weak minded. benkei
How about 'the most hated family in America'? They're blatantly insane, and brainwash their kids to wave around signs saying God hates us all and the soldiers deserved to die for fighting for a country that allowed 'fags' to live a free life. And they're Christian apparently! I don't mind people with religion, almost everyone you know believes something or other, but it's the fanatics who ruin everything. Crashing plates into buildings, causing scenes outside soldiers funerals, preaching in the streets, etc. THEY'RE the ones who make us resent religion so much, shoving it in our faces all the time, ruining lives, it's almost as bad as women's magazines with 'What celebrity is pregnant now, Who's said what about what, who ate something, look how this celebrity did something normal people like you and me do', it does my head in! So I chose not to read papers, magazines, watch it on TV, much in the same way I don't read the bible, I don't pay any interest in other religions, I just ignore it the best I can, but society is forcing us to deal with it every day. This country is bending over backwards trying to over-accommodate foreign religions, and forgetting all about what country this actually is! If someone wants to practice a religion, then they should do it off their own back, not have the government give them everything and make a scene about it. I don't even know what country this is anymore! It's TOO multi-cultural! And none of it is English!
Konrad
England was one of the most devoted crusader countries in all Europe. Yet most of those posts are slating christians for some reason Most hated family in US is a weak example of fanatism, I would rather focus on those who are blowing up markets full of their fellow countryman ... Also question: What about is this country then? Freedom of word, religion etc, etc? What are traditional english values? Could someone actually TELL me, how should I integrate with english people (except from getting totally wasted from Thursday till Sunday)? Look around people, you are moaning sitting comfortable in your house in front of your PC, but how many of you invited some friends to your house for a chat, do you still know names of your neighbours? When was the last time you tried to befriend someone with different views or get to KNOW him better before repeating same b*&%cks every Friday in pub? Most of those opinions I've heard from some people is just plainly stupid and ignorant, shows huge gaps in education about Europe, history, geography. Politics raving about England being biggest multi-cultular society in Europe, I say it's just small, seperate countries in one country. It would be different, if fellow englishman would take off his head out of his buttock and stop thinking about themself as a superior nation. Speak to people, treat them fair (and i mean in PRACTICE not THEORY) and maybe those morons in goverment will not get another stupid PC ideas. Oh - and before someone will decide about any strange moves (like abadoning of Christmass) he/she should get some opinion from interested parties first PS. How many of you are actually celebrate Christmass properly? How many of you knows origins of Eastern holidays?
Ewen
Away from the centres of trade and commerce, away from the cosmopolitan sprawl, away from the media Tsunami, away from the eyes of the holy, there are opportunities for contentment and ease. Scoboblio
When you put aside all of the frenzy-whipping tabloid headlines, how many times has religion actually directly had an adverse effect on any of the posters here? Now that I think about it I can't think of a single time it's done me any harm (and I'm not counting terrorism, the IRA had a passion for blowing things up long before we'd heared of al-qaeda). I've heard so many religious based horror stories in the news you'd think we were all rioting and panicking in the streets. I have however, seen plenty of good done - Christian aid organisations etc. Religious beliefs do seem silly to me, but each to their own. AlexJames
does anyone really know what sharia intails... according to the koran, you are allowed to kill an apostate (someone who converts from islam to another relegion) by the blade... and a court under sharia law is allowed to pass this... Please knowone dis-agree with me, this is my job and I work with and help people in other countries who are affected by this... Its an abomination and should never of even been considered in this land let alone anywhere else... IMO
