Rob
Science can be unproven as well. Science can't prove everything, in fact in many cases it can't even prove itself. Where did the laws of physics come from in the first place? However, if science itself cannot say where the laws of physics ultimately come from, there is no reason to expect that religion will do any better and rather good reasons to think it will do worse. Scientific theories are often replaced with new, better theories. I'm no expert of course, but I can't think of any "science fact" that has been unproven, eg, Newtons laws of motion, thermodynamics, behaviour of gases etc. Laws of physics started as theories from observation, proven through experimentation, dropping a hammer and a feather on the moon being a good example. I do like to make the analogy of scientists and priests as both men in long coats. If quantum physics experts tell me there are 11 dimensions or particles that can be in the same place or at opposite ends of the universe both at the same time, I kinda have to take their word for it as I know no better, much like the simple peasant who is by the village priest about eternal damnation. That's the Kabbalah lot - it's called a roite bindele and it keeps the evil eye away apparently... or generates lots of money for the people making this stuff up and selling pieces of string. Guest JDEE
Did nobody notice this bit: That's OK then I think, unless your family forces you to go to a sharia court. Both parties have to consent to being ruled by sharia law (as opposed to UK law)
BASHTHEBISHOP
Both parties have to consent to being ruled by sharia law (as opposed to UK law) Yes but i am sure that consent might appear to have been given due to family/ community pressure etc. A bit simlar to arranged marriage maybe....arranged divorce? n boost
If the majority of people in this country have the same views as most of the people on this thread, then no wonder the country is a $hithole! People seem to constantly be slagging off religion and coming up with crap but the fact is that if it is not your religion then RESPECT other peoples views, stop making silly comments, grow up and u might actually get a genuine debate. AJI
What doesnt exist is evolution. Adaption, but not evolution. It still amazes me why people still do not understand the proof of evolution. Evolution is proven beyond a shaddow of a doubt. It can be proven 'day in, day out' if you wanted...... take a petri dish full of bacteria.... introduce some toxic chemical or a change in environment and you will find that most of it will die.... BUT as it reproduces, there will be a small % of mutations that allow it to re-grow. This is not adaption but mutation..... and therefore evolution. Adaption would be if the existing bacteria were to not die but have an 'intelligence' to know how to overcome the toxic chemical or change in environment. Evolution is the process of mutation by total % chance that it will suit the new environment or become immune to the chemicals. Superbugs in hospitals are also proof of evolution and the fact that they are becoming resistant to anti-biotics. I choose bateria and viruses as examples because these evolution cycles are fast enough for us to notice them. Choosing animal and human evolution as examples seems to affect people's acceptance due to the large timescales involved.

TBH, I do respect other peoples religions, respect enough not to ponder and query into them, because I couldnt give a monkies, If they are only peoples views why are billions spent on large displays and glorious specticals, the fact is these views infuence others big time because folk can't keep their faith to theirselves, I've never understood why Churches and chapels, houses of faith need massive ceilings, and so much money spent on decoration and all the rest of it, its paid for via our cash, if they believe in their faith that much it shouldnt bother folk to pray from a basement or a shed, I believe in cars, but we dont get taxpayers cash to fund big Garages and nice carparks for us to arrive at

Why? Why should I respect someones religious beliefs, when they are just that, groundless beliefs that waste time, energy and human endeavour. I would say "grow up," grow up and stop believing in something thats no different to Santa Claus.
Supra-Brett
Hopefully at some point in the future science will fully answer questions like how life began on earth and how the universe began, but even if it does, there will always be a great number of people ready to believe that a flood 6000 years ago "aged" the earth, that some sky pixie buried dinosaur bones to test our faith, that a hurricane destroyed New Orleans because a lesbian lives there or even that the slaughter of 6 millions jews was to the greater glory of god. That's the trouble with Science vs. Religion, you can't reason with the unreasonable. This is the best thread ive seen in ages. The post above is a classic, especially the bit about a "sky pixie". Funniest ive seen in ages. Anyway, heres my 2p and fuel for the fire. As a person who hasnt had religion (or lack of it) forced down my throat since birth (my dad doesnt believe and my mum is christian) i was able to make up my own mind. I listened to those that did believe and those that didnt and decided i dont believe. Also, as someone who chose a science as my higher education (Chemistry) my stance was even more firmly set down the "non believer " path. 1) Evolution does exist (Fact - described well by a previous post). 2) Some things cant be explained (YET). Time will tell if we become clever enough to work them out. 3) Religion has caused more wars over the years than anything else (enough said) 4) Ive never heard of a war involving non believers (YET) 5) in terms of Sharia law in the UK, i have not yet made up my mind. But thats because i dont know enough about it, and i dont think we should fear what we dont understand, so i will try and learn more before i make up my mind on the subject. 6) I agree that the problem with science vs religion is that you cant reason with the unreasonable. HOWEVER - the problem with that saying, is that both sides use it !!!!
