knocking sound from gearbox?

Hi I am a bit worried about a knocking/rattle sound coming from the gearbox area of my rz tt manual. It sounds like there is something loose and moving about when I am moving slow and lift of the throttle and then re-apply throttle. It does it under breaking when i apply breaks I hear the same noise. Its as if there is something swinging about down there. It does not make any of these noise's when staionory, only in motion. I have had it into the garage and they have checked the engine mounts and gearbox mounts and all the bushes but they were all fine. Also my girlfriend has been driving it and reported it has jumped out of 1st gear when setting off a few times. Getting worried any ideas anyone? thanks Jamie....

My mechanic has check everthing is tight. but he has just told me when he gets the prop shaft in his hand and moves it about he can hear the rattly knocking noise i have been talking about. he thinks it could be something from inside the gearbox but does not no much about them. is there many things inside there that could go wrong ?. who would be the best person to take it to ? thanks for any light you could shine on my problem :D.. jamie

Mines displays almost identical behaviour, clunk/rattle coming on and off the throttle like there is a degree of free play in the transmission somewhere and mine has also popped out of first quite a few times over the past 6 months or so. I also get a bit movement in the gearstick whilst in second when coming off and on the throttle.

hiya mikey, Its a 6speed i know about the clunk when changeing gear but this a loud metalic knock when i lift off the throttle and the same when i re-apply as if some thing is loose but i have had all the mounts and all linkage's checked. A friend has the same car as me 6 speed manual and his does not make this noise and mine also has stock flywheel..

Hi ratm, sound like we have the same problem to me but this carnt be normal can it ? do you think there is a problem in the gearbox ?

I wouldn't have thought it was normal. I didn't think it did it when I first picked the car up in January. It was clunky in terms of shifts but not the transmission rattle/clunk when coming on and off the accelerator. I have no idea really. I have been thinking about taking it to get checked out.

hi jacko and chirs, the noise my car is making really does not sound right it makes the same noise by just lifting the clutch and droping it. and i have just had a new clutch and flywheel fitted and replaced all seals and bolts and its still making the same noise iam really at a loss to where the noise is coming from and whats making it. i would just leave it and forget about it but its that loud people turn around in the street as if something has just droped off my car lol i got the car to turn heads because of looks :). my friend has got the same car 6 speed manual with getrag box and it does not make this noise. he has the thumping sound when changing gear as all 6 speeds do but not. this lound metalic clanking sound. and iam sure when it came out of the show room from toyota it did not have it :p if any one can give me any ideas to what could be making this noise i would greatly appreciate. so far its cost me £1000 i still left with problem :( thanks jamie....

i sometimes get a noise like that too and so far i put it down to gearbox mount as the rubber has perished so i plan to replace that and do the seals as chris says. i also get a slight lurch forwards and a dull thud at the same time when i am in neutral and put it in first sometimes (yes, the clutch is down ;) )

do you get any of those things happening? if i change the mount and it still does it i'm stumped. anybody else experience this or know what up?

Did you ever find the cause of the noise?

No sorry bud I still have the noise have not found the problem, but some one has told me it could be some free play in the prop shaft or dif as it's an 16 year old car things get loose after time says it could be the prop taking up the slack!! When I get some money I think iam going to get a new prop shaft and dif fitted..

If you got the same problem as me it won't be your gearbox as I have had mine in 200 bits and put all new mounts on it and still does it :( I have also had a new flywheel and clutch and had every mount there is to check, checked iam at a loss with it other than replacing the prop and dif don't no what to do and yes sounds like you could have the same problem as me bud :(
