Chris Wilson
Got to lift a 22 foot long 10 by 6 inch RSJ (an old one, not one of the new fangled lightweight things) into the roof space in the garage above the ceiling, through a gap made by removing some of the roof tiles. It should then allow me to lift a race car onto a stand and allow another to be stored under it. The theory is sound Just 2 of us to do it, with the tractor and loader and block and tackle, rollers and muscle power. I'm have 4 Shredded Wheat in the morning! The calculations have been done by structural engineers, i.e , when I bought it we set it on 2 sleepers under each extremity and 6 big men jumped up and down on the middle of it. It didn't deflect that much, so.... sorted
Homer
Make sure you have a video camera filming it. "You've been framed" pay handsomely these days

Chris Wilson
More mayhem at the Wilson household. Good luck! Spare me a thought while you are lounging on some idyllic beach. Send beer.
Pete
Spare me a thought while you are lounging on some idyllic beach. Send beer. I'll bring you some back...although you might not appreciate the receptacle it comes out of or that it's been re-distilled. I'm not flying until 22:00 so I'll listen out for a loud clang before then. Chris Wilson
You can come and help then, thought you'd be off at the crack of dawn! Just think, you can arrive there 20 pounds lighter with muscles you never knew you had. Or you could end up in Shrewsbury General with something horrible twisted, if you want to be really pessimistic. I'll give the beer a miss then... Pete
Just think, you can arrive there 20 pounds lighter with muscles you never knew you had. Last minute bikini body workout eh? My body is already a temple...A dilapidated and disused one.

gordy07
Maybe someone should go round there too see if theyre lying under a very large steel beam!
Chris Wilson
Jobs done, no dramas Will post a pic sometime. Just got to pack around the RSJ to stop any chance of it trying to turn over, put a new piece of felt in and put the slates back this morning. We started at 10.00 AM and were in the pub for dinner by 7.00 PM
Wez
Making space for more race cars then?
Chris Wilson
http://www.chriswilson.tv/beam/beam.html Never took any pics of the thing on the ground, but it was a big *ugger. Now no one would ever know it was there, just an eyebolt through the ceiling inside. Worth the sweat to keep things neat, IMO. Photo with the roof intact is an AFTER photo, I didn't cheat
Wez
Nice job. Are you going to post a pic of it in use.
SteveR
So does a car hang from this beam then, or go on top of it? I'm confused now. Did Pete come round to help in the end?
Rob
Jobs done, no dramas Will post a pic sometime. Chris Wilson
Inside the garage the ceiling will just have two machine eyes showing, with a through rod and locking collars. From that I can lift a race car and set it on a dolly on wheels, and put another race car underneath it. I then have 2 cars on the floor area just one would normally take up. Awaiting the machine eyes and collars, when it's done I'll post a pic of a flying race car.

Chris Wilson
So, it's not bolted to concrete padstones then? One end is coach bolted to a wooden base, the other floats to allow expansion lengthwise. One end is sat on the door aperture RSJ, the far end is on an alloy spreader plate across the breeze block inner wall and the red brick outer wall. Chris Wilson
Used it for the first time yesterday, and it works, the building still stands, and it deflected .125 of an inch
