jevansio
Well Ill stick up for 911 porsches if you like, I think they are awesome. Like I said in the original post if I don't go for an Ultima for whatever reason then a 911 will be at the top of my list. Sorry Trev, that wasn't directed at you, it was regarding Syed comment
TrevS
Sorry Trev, that wasn't directed at you, it was regarding Syed comment no worries, I also agree that Porsches do get a lot of negative press from people. I think its come from the fact that porsches built up a reputation of being driven by tossers over the past few years which hasn't helped. You only have to drive through London and see every other city boy driving a 911 to see what I mean. Its a shame because I reckon theres 70% of owners that have no idea of how good their cars are and will never really appreciate them. Syed Shah
WFT? How exactly did my post come across as Porsche-bashing? You seem to be making yourself in to a victim! "911 very capable" , "911 great car" "would take one over an Evo" yeah I am a real Porsche hater. Sorry that I do not believe it to be the greatest car in EVERY dispiline, must make me a hater. Thorin
I think you're all missing the point. Porsche's suck, they're nothing compared to a well sorted Supra, obviously.

Also, dare call me that to my face, I very much doubt it. Yes I have, it is good, very good. A Evo will do it better, for cheaper. Heaven forbid someone on here other than you could have driven one. Its not a bloody Veyron! Sorry, I forgot, a Porsche 996 is all the car a man ever needs. M-way = 996 turbo Wet B-road = 996 turbo Need to tow a caravan = 996 turbo Offroading? Pah, no Landy needed, just take your trusty 996 turbo. No; I am very scared of you; I heard 996 turbos are pretty damn good fighters too. Chris Wilson
Can't believe this thread, surely EVERYONE knows that 911's are a triumph of development over design, and Porsche themselves wake up every morning pinching themselves that people are really STILL buying these technically flawed lemons Face it, 90% of owners are buying a lifestyle icon, and the ones that race them are probably doing a similar thing, aided by series that pander to them as their owners usually have a crock of gold in the garden. To me a 911 is like the Emperor's new clothes, but I'm a *wat, of course....

Guest onL0oker
G-Man's Ultima GTR (previous 0-100mph-0) record holder, did 204mph at Bruntingthorpe. His Ultima had about 685 bhp. Another Ultima GTR with 690hp LSX hybrid, Hewland sequential gearbox did 220+mph at Bruntingthorpe. If these cars are geared properly, they'll dissipate all tuned Porsches. Straight line, corners, braking, etc... Just look at the Top Gear track record the Ultima GTR completely destroyed the other supercars. Another GTR did 0-211mph in 19 seconds with street tires. I have never heard of any street legal tuned Porsches with street tires putting out those numbers.

j_jza80
Sorry that I do not believe it to be the greatest car in EVERY dispiline Not in every discipline, just most of them. I think the 911s track record speaks for itself really. Our cars have a little racing pedigree (although Toyota saw fit to dump the 2JZ for weight distribution), the Porsche sets the benchmark. SimonB
(although Toyota saw fit to dump the 2JZ for weight distribution) Actually it was more because Toyota already had a race developed and proven engine from their rally car - it was much cheaper and easier to use that rather than race develop a new engine. TrevS
Hey all A quick update on this. I am still looking at the Ultima as a real option for my next car and as something that I can work on as a long term project. But with the credit crunch hitting the car market quite hard at the moment it means that for the money I would spend on the Ultima build I could possibly pick up a Porsche 997 C2 or even a Ferrari F355. Before anyone starts I know all about running costs of the Ferrari, but for the amount of miles I plan on driving the Ultima, Porsche or Ferrari I can live with costs invloved. So the question is, do I now look to go down the Ferrari/Porsche route over the next year and then look to buy an Ultima in a couple of years time as my garage project? TrevS
Also I have been in touch with the company who are working on a BMW V10 Ultima. Apparently its going well but its not a quick or easy project. They have said that if I wanted to go down the v10 route then they would help me out with the build, and build me the bespoke parts that they have had to make for their conversion. However they also said that realistically I'd need a BMW m5/m6 donor car for the build as they are using most of the mechanicals from the car (engine, ecu, idrive system etc) and that I should hold off building my car until they have a finished project running so that I can get a realistic idea of cost and the difficulty of the conversion etc. The finished project should be amazing though, they sent me some top secret videos of the engine running, and boy does it sound good. So with me now playing the waiting game and holding off to see what a v10 Ultima would be like and cost maybe I could go for a Ferrari F355 while the prices are quite reasonable and keep it for a year or two. Then if I want to go down the v10 Ultima route I could sell the fez to fund the project and hopefully not lose too much money on it. Any thoughts? marc_p
Now then Trev, how are you doing? I was speaking to the lad you sold the Supra to a couple of weeks ago and you'll be pleased to know that it's still being looked after But regarding the Ultima, I would say, do it, but to keep costs down just buy one really cheap that was started but never finished, i've seen a few rolling chassis on ebay and pistonheads for sale as I also really want to get one a few years down the line. Oh and don't get an F355, everyone will just think it's an MR2
Chris Wilson
If you want something with build quality Ultimas can only dream of, and don't mind an open top, no roof option at all, then the PalmerSport Jaguar V6 road version of my Zeus race cars is worth a look. they are probably THE best made of the race car on the road variants. Now or soon would be the time to beat someone senseless on price.... Look at an Ultima chassis then look at the PalmerSport "Zeus". I have quite a few jigs and access to pretty much all the rest, so running one should be relatively cheap. Handling wise they'd make an Ultima look plain daft. http://bookatrack.com/-pC?2314

Trouble with anything like this for me is that there's not much chance it would get over the speed bump going onto our estate. I wonder if I could complain to the council. Oh and don't get an F355, everyone will just think it's an MR2 Hey Marc Glad to hear my old car is being looked after. I have been looking at unfinished project Ultimas but the problem is finding one thats only just been started. The reason for this is that I'd need to lower the floor (due to my height) and also if I were to fit a bmw v10 the chassis requires some modifications such as fitting new mounting brackets etc for the engine. So the key is to find a kit without too much work done on it for v8 fitment. Let me know if you spot any though Trev
TrevS
Oh and don't get an F355, everyone will just think it's an MR2 Maybe until you drove off: I don't think people would think it was an mr2. As good as some of the replicas are you can still tell they aren't real 355's. They are too small for a start. Then again, I guess I wouldn't want people thinking I drove a Toyota
