charlieboo
Just had a new OEM clutch fitted to my 6 speed TT. Clutch pedal used to feel quite heavy, but now it’s light as a feather and when selecting reverse (which is now quite difficult), there is a loud thud. Anyone got any ideas what this could be? charlieboo
Can’t remember cost of clutch parts as it was purchased a while ago and I fitted it myself using the guide on mkiv.com. Anyway, I can select any gear with great ease with the engine switched off. 1st to 6th is a little more difficult with the engine running, but reverse has become almost impossible to select. The thud seems to be coming from the rear of the car so I am thinking that it has to be down to the clutch not disengaging properly and the noise travelling through the drive shaft. I have bleed the slave cylinder (using the drip method), adjusted the pedal, and double checked the order and location of the release bearing washers, etc, but still no joy. I'm going to get someone to help me bleed the clutch the normal way tomorrow, but for now, has anyone got any other ideas?
Chris Wilson
Sounds like the clutch assembly is either installed incorrectly or faulty. Is it a genuine Toyota kit? Who fitted it?
SimonB
Are you sure you have the clutch disk on the right way round?
charlieboo
Quote from http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/clutch/ "On all aftermarket disks, the cone section faces the rear of the car. This is opposite of the stock disk shown in the picture." I read this as "cone section faces front of car" and this is how the old one came out, which worked fine. Chris Wilson
It won't go together with the plate in the wrong way around. Have you put the pull bearing assembly together right?
charlieboo
I used the Toyota manual and the old assembly as reference. The only thing that I questioned was which way around the weird washer type thing that isn't flat (sits between lip of bearing, pressure plate and large snap ring) goes. In the end I figured it was six of one and half a dozen of the other, as it’s so thin.
Chris Wilson
Send me your e-mail address and I'll send the official bumf on this, including master cylinder adjustment.. If you get stuck I can have a look, but you sound as if you know what you are doing

bignum
Have you got someone in the car pressing the clutch pedal while you look in the inspection holes to see if it looks ok, i did this last week with my brothers car and could see the bearing/hub wasn`t pulling back properly, ended up being a dodgy pressure plate, put my old 1 on and all is good.
