Guest tron20
Hi guys, I've been searching the forum for a while this evening, and have yet to find the answer to my question. Does anyone, particularly the TRD 3000GT owners, know what model to insure one as? I've been looking round insurance companies and most have said they won't cover that model as "it's not on our system" Obviously I know its basically just a normal supra with TRD bits fitted, but wouldn't that invalidate the insurance if I had an accident and just insured it as a normal import supra? So for those who have insured, or are insuring a TRD 3000GT, who did you insure it with and what model is it insured as? Thanks in advance Paul
Homer
You will need a specialist insurance on a factory TRD as they won't be registered under 99% of most companies systems. Try our club insurer Sky, but keep in mind you will need a few years NCB and driving experience to get a quote. If that doesn't work then try A-plan special schemes (Though they won't even quote me on an NA, even though I'm 31), but it works for some. There's probably less than 3 (known) people in the UK with a genuine TRD cars so don't expect much feedback from actual owners
Guest tron20
Cheers for the reply, I'll see what sky say tomorrow, already filled out the quote form on their site so they should ring me if not I'll give them a ring and ask for Jay, he seems to be the guy from reading the Sky insurance thread. I'm 25, almost 26, and have been driving over 8 years, but not got many NCB's in my own name, hope that won't have too much effect, may have to just buy the car and stick it in a garage til I can insure it although how dull would that be Paul
Homer
Your age shouldn't be a problem, unless you live in a hell-hole postcode With a car like this in my experience it's best you speak to Jae or Ollie directly to save messing about with the first line folks. If they complain tell them I said to do it, they will understand

Guest tron20
I may be buying it just need to make sure I can get insurance on it first. I see you're still interested in it Jurgen, it'd be a shame to let it go after seeing it in the flesh, its a gorgeous looking car, and in such a fantastic condition. Just hope I can get everything sorted in time, fingers crossed. Paul
jimwire
Would be nice to see that car around This neck of the woods. Hope you can sort it.
Guest tron20
It wasn't you in a silver supra going down nottingham road in Ripley last night around 8:20pm was it, if it was very nice looking supra Paul
Guest tron20
Tried sky insurance, they said they didn't have the TRD 3000GT on their system, and passed me onto another insurance service, who didn't even ask me what the car was, but said 3 companies would be willing to insure me on a jap import when I know there are more than those three that would touch me on any jap import including the supra twin turbo. I've yet to find an insurer who will insure the TRD 3000GT for what it is. Last thing I want to do though is insure it as a normal twin turbo, then find out that the insurer invalidates the insurance because its a trd 3000gt instead.... stuck between a rock and a hard place at the minute GRRR! Wheres Ollie from sky insurance when you need him? Paul
tDR
You could insure it as a normal import TT but go for agreed value and list all the parts that make it a TRD 3000GT and their cost to get the necessary agreed value to cover it. Cheers, Brian.
Homer
I'll contact Ollie and Jae and point them to this thread. I am sure they can sort something out for you.
Guest tron20
Cheers mate, much appreciated. I did think about doing what Brian said, and insuring it as a normal supra with a long list of TRD mods, but I can't find enough information on the mods the car actually has. Obviously the exterior has quite a few TRD parts on it, plus the bilstein suspension and alloys, but unsure if trd modified the engine, etc. I'd think most of the TRD parts are no longer available for it either it'd make it quite hard to price them up... I'd think most if not all the TRD parts which are on the car I'm looking at are listed here TRD JP parts but with such a lack of information available for the TRD 3000GT, who knows whats on it? Homer
Was this car originally imported by Jurgen? If it was he should be able to fill in the gaps. I don't know if the TRD cars came with all the catalogue parts, stuff like the motor mounts and bushes may not be changed, but most of the stuff should be easy to identify. IIRC TRD never touched the engines, though it is worth checking if the car has been decatted as it might be bpu, which will affect insurance. Guest tron20
Yeah Jurgen was the very man who imported the car, so he probably knows it well, from reading his original for sale thread I believe he said it was stock, everything in the engine bay looked stock to me when I saw it. Not sure about a decat, didn't actually look under the car Paul

Thorin
It's a supra with a body kit, I'd just insure it as such. I wouldn't confuse them.
Dnk
I know mines a copy Trd widebody kit but sky insure me with all my mods declared so dont see the differance with a genuine one other than the kit is more money.

Safely Insured
Hi, apologies, I have just seen this thread (thanks Homer). I'm am sure we can do something for the TRD.. I believe we insure a TRD MR2.. I need to point out though.. the car is not on our system... unfortunately this was not referred through to me yesterday.. usually cars which aren't on our system are run by me and just because they are not on the system that doesn't mean we cannot insure them, we just have to work a bit harder that is all. The TRD will not be on any UK insurer's system. Also, I need to point out, whilst I'm pretty sure we can insure the car.. there is no guarantee we will insure it for the individual unless he meets our criteria.. as it stands, I find the lack of NCB a bit worrying as we may not be able to put the customer onto our car club scheme. I will PM the customer for his details. Regards Ollie Sky Insurance

Gazboy
It's a supra with a body kit, I'd just insure it as such. I wouldn't confuse them. You would have to be utterly bonkers to insure a TRD as a kitted Supra, you would have to really fight to get a fraction of the cars worth back in a total loss, and what would concern me is who would/could repair one of those panels? I would atleast want it going to TTE in Germany.
Guest Jon M
Hey i must be mad then gaz LOL, cause thats exactly what i did. End of the day i looked at it really simply, if i drove her through the walls of scrapyard heaven whether i had her insured for £10k, £20k or a few million where on this earth would i get replacement parts that are genuine trd parts including the wheels and partly the reason this car is so rare and has such a good retained value - i.e. she will increase in value if she is kept in mint condition is because she is like new so if i wrote her off she would really be no more valuable than any other supra with a cat c or d to its name. Might seem mad to some but ive got friends in the insurance industry and that was pretty much a common sense way of insuring her without creating added hassle just trying to get TRD on the insurance policy. I know mines a copy Trd widebody kit but sky insure me with all my mods declared so dont see the differance with a genuine one other than the kit is more money. Bingo! See life can be so simple if you just make it simple
