CraigGilchrist
Ok, I'm kinda pissed off today; here's the story. I put my car in the bodyshop about 6/7 weeks ago to get a key-scratch out of the bootlid (not done by me, just done by some jerk). I gave them the car before I went on holiday, and agreed to pick it up when I got back, a week and a half later (in this time he was going to see if he could find anyone interested in buying it). When I picked it up, I thought the petrol was an awful lot lower than when I gave it to them, but it was already fairly empty anyway. Either way, I didn't take a note of the mileage (schoolboy error). Today I was sitting, idling about in the car, and rummaging through the glovebox to see if there was any forgotten treasures, and I found a receipt in the arm rest. The receipt was from a Lidl in Livingston (I live in Edinburgh), and I suspect they've been having a jolly in my car. I doubt I can do much other than tell them they're bawbags, but I'm pretty raging...
Pete
If you're leaving it somewhere you do not trust always make a point of writing the mileage on a post it note and leaving it on the dash.
ivan
Some guy in the paper yesterday left his Audi to be fixed at a garage while he went on holiday. Being a bit of an IT nerd he'd fitted it with an automatic tracker system that recorded the fact that the garage had used his car 27 times for joyriding while he was away. Now THAT's cause for complaint if ever I saw it!
Kranz
Its a TWOC plain and simple. They have implied permission to 'test drive' the car unless you state they CANNOT drive it at all..... However, use outside of a test drive, or moving it to another place of repair, is TWOC. They will have to prove that that journey(s) were on proper business for the repair of that car. benkei
I've heard countless tales of bodyshop using customer's cars for trips to and from places! My brother left his car at a bodyshop for some work to be done, and he had a call off one of his close mates asking if he was out in his car as it had drove past him not too long ago. Obviously the answer was 'no', so he went down to the garage and gave them a right bollocking!
edd_t
I left my car for an service with a place, and found around 70km+ added to it! about the same as going to the seafront and back from where they were, so Im guessing they had a pretty good weekend with it. This place was recommend to me aswell, they have never had my business since.

Well I definitely don't trust them now! Not that I'll be taking my car there again anyway...
hogmaw
If they are just repairing a scratch there is no need to even drive it out of the premises
Rob
Perhaps a claim for wear and tear, at 40p per mile? Possibly to be deducted from the final invoice, unless you've already paid.
Daston
Perhaps a claim for wear and tear, at 40p per mile? Possibly to be deducted from the final invoice, unless you've already paid. that sounds reasonable. When I picked up my Tuscan they had done 200 miles and nearly emptied the tank. however it was in with potention engine problems so they were test driving it every day on long trips and short trips to make sure they had fixed the problem. They even called me to ask if it was ok to drive it. However they could have left me with more than 1 litre of fuel in the tank

That's as maybe, but you know and I know that the Procurator Fiscal would never run with it and it would be treated as a civil dispute. I would be looking for some money off the bill for wear and tear.
JustGav
If you have the receipt from Lidl, it should have a time and date on it. I would go speak to the garage and take a photocopy of the receipt. If you have the details of when your car was in the garage then match the two up and go kick their.... Now THAT's cause for complaint if ever I saw it! I've often thought about that.. a self contained GPS unit which records some useful pieces of info from the car. Could hire it out to people when they go to the garage for servicing

Yeah, that's what made me most confused when I found the receipt. Tonnes of stuff I'd never buy (Tuna steaks, vegetables, etc. Not a single pie or deep-fryable thing!), and I was trying to figure out if one of my mates could have dropped it in my car. But it was from the 27th of July, when I was in Gothenberg, and I've only driven the car twice since then! Will actually double check the time on it too, as if it's outside 'office' hours it'll give me more reason to yell at them. Might hit them up for a free wheel refurb or something... jamesmark
Slightly different but I once bought a old Mini Cooper, back in them days there was no drive away in an hour so I had to go and pick the car up the next weekend. I did take a note of the mileage (just incase I needed it for insurance) and when I picked the car up the week after there was 287miles extra on the clock. All I got was you must have not read it correctly.
