Well I will be man enough to retract my statement. As never really looked at it the way that Rob wrote above.

Look it it another way, you don't go to a cinema to take a snap of a film you know you won't like then upload the image so you can tell your mates how shit that film was. Now you could argue that you've saved your mates a wasted journey but I am fairly certain what films I will hate, anything with Ben Stiller, Jack Black or that other prick Will Ferrell in it will make me want to slit my wrists, so strangley I wouldn't use a site that consisted of ripping the three of them to pieces.

It's train spotting but without having an interest in trains basically.

Personally I haven't been to a car show so I can't speak from experience however I do believe most - if not all - members have a good interest in cars and so attend car shows to see the nice ones. We don't get physically upset when we see Barried cars so it's not as if they ruin our day but it doesn't mean we can't enjoy looking at the nice cars at the show. I might even go so far as to suggest some Barryboys members may even participate in shows.

Besides I'd go to a Barry show if one came up nearby. Just because I think they're silly and don't want to own one doesn't mean I don't enjoy seeing Barry cars!

Hope that cleared things up a bit but every member is different and I'm just speaking my own opinion.

No, it's fox hunting where we're not allowed to kill the fox...

Yeah but in this case its not. One of your members went to a "modified" Jap car show! were ALL the cars I saw including the NEW R35 GTR had been modified. So "fox hunting" its not! that would involve dogs and horses etc the tools of a "barry" member is a notebook, pen and camera with probably a anorak very close by and I do mean that literally :D Therefore a day "barrying" is the same as a day "train" spotting just with out the trains :) Hey don't worry about it most people have little odd pleasures I just find it amusing that their are so many odd people with the same odd pleasure in the same place :) Enjoy your err ermm "hobby"

Sounds like the automotive equivalent of the Ramblers Association.

LOL :D

Have a look on IMDB, each film has a message board, and each one has many people discussing aspects of the film and a lot of slating goes on. Should they not comment on the film, because they don't make better ones?

Who are you to say Jack Black isn't funny? What hilarious films have you starred in recently? He put a lot of work into his career and is worth millions and you think you can just slag him off, you're just jealous of Jack Black and his hollywood stardom.

You don't go fox hunting in the bath you fool, you go to a field where the foxes live. When Barry hunting you go to the field where Barries live. (For the record: A Barry is the owner/modifier of the car. A Barryboy is the same. A 'Barryboys Member' is someone from the site).

And as I said before, we don't all dislike every modified car. I'm a rather large fan of Supras (MkIIIs, mind you) and of the R35 and I do enjoy seeing modified cars. If I see one that's over the top I'll take a few snaps and pop it on BB, if I don't then it's still a good day out.

I don't see why you think we're sad for going to the same shows that you do, to see the same cars and to speak to the same people. It's a very odd accusation.

Go to our site and have a look through the SOTW (shed of the week) section and have a look at some of the legendary cars. Then you'll understand the point of the site. It's not to hate all modified cars, it's to point out and ridicule the funny ones.

Did you really think "yep I'm happy with that" before pressing submit?

Come on Rob, you appear to be an intelligent chap, think a bit harder and have another go.

Your link just displays the login page.

I personally like the BarryBoys site. The members just like a laugh at the expense of Barried up cars that people find while out and about.

If its rotten, its funny IMO. :)

I cannot believe how many people are laughing along with someone who doesn't understand a metaphor let alone proper grammar.

Tsch. After the orange juice I had such high hopes...

Whenever I read a thread at Barry Boys, it frankly just p1sses me off. I like a laugh as much as the next guy, but there are so many ignorant, covetous, lowlife/no-life, got-nothing-to-do buttmunches on there that it makes me want to line them up and have them shot. Freedom of speech? Most of them don't deserve it. Damn... They've turned me into a bigot.

Matt, have a virtual hug on me.

I might have to register on BB and rain down scorn and fury later.

Ooww you're getting quite defensive :innocent: LOL Listen 'would be' train spotter, I'm being just like you! I have a "standard car related hobby" that millions of people do i.e. owning, maintaining and modifying a performance car. You have a "non standard car related hobby" i.e. walking round like a train spotter taking pictures and making notes (digitally) then spend time discussing them. Therefore what do you think about me setting up a website something like perhaps http://www.nerdsandgeekhobbies.com or even http://www.wouldbtrainspotter.com, then invitie other people to go around and find out about other peoples non standards hobbies then we can all sit round in our virtual judgmental world laughing at how odd and stupid these people are safe in the knowledge that we have our non standard hobbies :) What do think :)

I cannot believe how many people are laughing along with someone who doesn't understand a metaphor let alone proper grammar.

If that was aimed at me I do understand a metaphor but their was no need for it because you are literally

like a train spotter!

You don't go fox hunting in the bath you fool,

Bath? bath is that another one of your odd hobbies? who said anything about a bath? Christ your not in the bath are you? Is that something that only elite barryboys members do? Does it give a chance to play with your power cable :D

Interesting thread and interesting site.

Social groups form through defining a set of norms for themselves. The group defines what it views as acceptable and unacceptable and you establish your membership to the group by following those norms.

So a crucial part of social group membership is to be clear about exactly what you disapprove of just as much as what you like. Groups partly define themselves by snobbishness towards individuals that aren't part of their group. For example, I'm part of a powerlifter's forum, and part of their group identity is to look down on the bodybuilders, who they regard as self-regarding nancy-boys.

The thing about barryboys is that it seems to be a group that is built almost exclusively around what they don't like. That's quite unusual. Although apologists are painting it as a car-lover's forum,it's all about despising, not celebrating. I remember at Uni their was an 'atheist society', which I briefly belonged to, but which seemed to revolve around discussing how rubbish christians were.

Maybe I'm missing something, but to use the film critics analogy Rob mentioned, it's like setting up a forum that focuses exclusively on films that you hate.

I guess we all need to look down on something, and Barryboys fulfills that need in a direct way.

Just use your old log-in, from when you registered in August 2005.

Here you are.

Remember back then when you used to slag off barried cars like that clio, and that saxo, and the funny beemer that you nominated for Shed Of The Week, but then more and more Supras started turning up, and you got a bit tetchy when Yulia's car was on there, and round about the start of 2006 you stopped posting altogether.

Very few people ever get banned from BB but for those that do it's generally through registering under a new name, so I thought I'd pre-warn you in case you'd forgot you were already a member.

Oh yeah, also I had a few visits over there a couple of years ago. There was a female Supra owner who was treated in a pretty vicious way and I put a few posts up.

It was very strange. A lot of 'barries' that posted on there were savaged for their chronic spelling, grammar and general incoherence. But some Barryboys members took equal exception to my own writing style, which was seen as too high falutin'. So it's hard not to see the site as tied up in a lower middle class weltanschauung, willing to despise the 'chavs' but probably suspicious of anything else that is outside of a very conservative (small 'c') set of values.

Having said that, there are some brilliantly funny comments on there.
