You will need a lot of Euros to feed the 'leccy meter for this experiment - Their own stats say - It uses around 120 MW (230 MW for all CERN), which corresponds more

or less to the power consumption for households in the Canton

(State) of Geneva. Assuming an average of 270 working days for the

accelerator (the machine will not work in the winter period), the

estimated yearly energy consumption of the LHC in 2009 is about

800 000 MWh. This includes site base load and the experiments.

The total yearly cost for running the LHC is therefore, about 19

million Euros.

the large hadron is just a larger particle accelerator,

Not JUST four times larger than the previous collider, but the point where there's no advantage in building any larger ones than this. If this one doesn't prove the existence of the Higgs boson and help fill in the missing gaps in the Standard Model of physics - I'm not sure they know what to try next.

It's going to replicate the exact conditions immediately following the big bang. It's like time travel, to see what happened At The Beginning.

So you see, it's not "just another particle accelerator".

You're right though, it could take years to get results. They have to prove anything they find dozens of times to ensure it's not a fluke.

What would be really exciting is if they could find some evidence towards string theory..however that seems unlikely.

Of course if we're (as a collective) correct about what happened in the big bang??

My claim to fame is that I spent alot of time over a three year period helping to make the bellows (flexible sections) for the Cern project :)

All made from stainless, all vac tested using helium.......pita job but a good earner as the thing is a money pit.

That's it, we're screwed if they've used British workmanship. ;)

Pretty cheap then, considering the Beijing opening ceremony cost 300 million dollars!!!

I thought it was more like 20 billion?

Edit: Ah, that was the total cost.

Quick!

Only got a few more seconds until the shock wave hits us Ewen.

USE IT, doesnt mater on what, just shag something before its too late

*looks around* furry slippers, vacuum cleaner, cat.

Decisions decisions. At least I'll have the best excuse for being late for work this year.
