Which car?

I am so confused (for a change)

My Volvo V70 is pretty much on it's last legs. I expect it will hang in there until the MOT in 6 months or so but I know it won't pass next year and be viable to fix so I'm going to have a replace it.

Problem I've got is that I really don't know what to get as a replacement.

There is a list of stuff that I do need from a car, plus I don't really know how much I should spend. I hate borrowing money to buy anything but I think I'm going to have to get a loan this time to ensure I get something decent.

So question 1) How much do I need to spend? 5k? 10k?

Criteria are:

- Must be decent sized estate car

- Musn't be gei

- Must be reasonable to drive i.e. power. Can't tolerate slow cars

- Must have excellent fuel consumption (currently costs me £70 a week doing 320 miles so would like to bring this right down)

- Must be reliable and not crazy money to service

My other concern is that sometimes I find that even the V70 isn't big enough. Once Stig is in the boot and my bike is in the back seat that leaves me with very little space to put bags etc if I'm away for the weekend etc. Also I have to take wheels off my bike which I find annoying. Not sure there is a car that I'll be able to just fit it in though? Then on the flip side some days it's just me in the car and it seems excessive?

I had a look at newer V70s but they all seem to be massively high mileage and the diesel ones seem to be rare. That was on a 5/6k budget but maybe that is all I can get for that money and I need to spend more? :taped:

Any suggestions?

What are they like though? I mean reliable etc? Renault always rings warning bells with me but they may be better these days?

Well, Mel is on her 3rd one to be honest... All been cheap ebay cars.

First one was £400, white 2l auto (Autobox went bang, however they are really known for having dodgy gearboxes, got 6 months out of it)

2nd was a lovely red £375 one, 65000 mile jobbie, was superb runner till someone drove into the back of it, writing it off

3rd one is now an estate 2l (£500), and I prefer driving it. They aren't supercars, but they are suprisingly average..Like a ronseal car really. Reliability wise they have been pretty good (apart from the one autobox). Parts are cheap, easily found.

My parents have driven 2 renaults into the ground in the last 10 years and the only issue they had was a hole in the air con condensor, so I'd agree with Gav:

I'd say a Volvo V70 estate. They're large, pretty nippy if you get a more top end model, cheap and pre-2001 BS tax rates.

How about something along the lines of this http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/625583.htm

I am a fan of Audis, if I could find one with sensible mileage it might be good. My concern is similar to the Volvos though, when you look at the 'new' price you then need to consider that the parts/labour etc will all be comparable, especially on an older high mileage one.

Hmm I'm just not sure, kinda fed up with having a run around, although there are advantages.

From a very biased point of view, I like my mondeo TDCI.... I'm sure the estate version would be a good work horse. :)

I've got an older V6 Mondeo Estate (96) and it has an absolutely massive bootspace, great leg room even with the drivers seat right back and much better in terms of space than anything Audi/BMW/Saab had to offer.

Thanks Faye I may well have a look. I had always thought they looked big enough.
